I could not upgrade my system since June 23. Now I did and after rebooting the booting process skips the grub list (where I have an old kubuntu and and old windows in addition to arch) and boots directly into arch. Then I see the kde welcome screen with the different elements being loaded but when it's done I am just left with a black screen with the mouse cursor. There are no panels or any desktop elements. I can use krunner (Alt+F2) to launch the applications. Any ideas on the source of these problems? I switched kms early start off with no luck. I use the nouveau driver. I searched the forums but could not find anything specific for these problems. I would really appreciate any help.

Nobody any idea where could I start looking at?

Let's split it up in two problems first: grub and KDE.
About grub, did you check the grub wiki page for information? Are there any clues in your menu.lst?

you might have to disable KMS in order for you to get into your desktop. Try adding
nomodesetto your kernel line in the /boot/grub/menu.lst.
EDIT : Reading further, it seems that the nouveau driver handles KMS pretty well so this should not be a problem. No harm trying though, you can always change it back.

There's no such thing as a stupid question, but there sure are a lot of inquisitive idiots !

Thanks litemotiv and Inxsible. I really cannot see anything strange in my menu.lst, located in my kubuntu partition. Adding nomodeset to my arch kernel line there did nothing to help. I also tried to use reinstall kubuntu and rebuilt my MBR since the issues seem to come from very early in the boot process and, indeed, I could not even boot from the cd. The Dell logo of my old Inspiron 8500 does not come off and no menus come up when pressing F12, nothing happens that I can see on the screen. I do hear the cd being read by the computer for a while and the processor seems to be working hard because the fans get very noisy but there is nothing I can see on the screen. I can open the cd tray and I literally power to computer off.

The recent 4.5 update fixed my kde problem. Not the booting problem so they were indeed different. Should I start thinking about changing my BIOS? This is my dmesg.log:

Now I did and after rebooting the booting process skips the grub list (where I have an old kubuntu and and old windows in addition to arch) and boots directly into arch.
[....]
my menu.lst, located in my kubuntu partition.
Can you describe a bit more how your setup looks like - do you have multible grub installs and how did you use them etc?

Yes, the grub I have installed in my MBR comes from my old kubuntu, menu.lst is
# menu.lst - See: grub(8), info grub, update-grub(8)
# grub-install(8), grub-floppy(8),
# grub-md5-crypt, /usr/share/doc/grub

This is a long shot, but could it be that one of your other distros (kubuntu/debian/?) installed grub2, so that your old menu.lst isn't actually used anymore? The debian grubs have hiddenmenu set by default, so that could explain why you don't see anything.
Have you tried pressing Escape a couple of times when booting up?

I pressed ESC and nothing, black screen with the boot process stopped, same as if I press F2 (to access BIOS). I did CTRL+ALT+DELETE and rebooted the computer, so the keyboard seems to be detected and working. Thing is I have not really booted in Kubuntu or updated it for years so the problem must come from Arch updates in the last months. The problem, however shows up before Arch starts. Could it be udev? mkinitcpio? Is the message in my dmesg.log
weird, boot CPU (#0) not listed by the BIOS.
SMP motherboard not detected.
Local APIC not detected. Using dummy APIC emulation.
normal?

If you can see your normal BIOS but can't see any Grub output, then i really don't know at this point. Udev and friends all kick in after Grub had finished so they can't be the cause. It almost sounds like a BIOS or framebuffer (hardware) problem but it would be very coincidental that this happened right after an Arch update..

No, I cannot see the BIOS, or grub output or anything. F2 or ESC while booting just hangs the system.
Offline
My guess is there's something wrong with your BIOS, rather than with GRUB. If you don't see a grub prompt despite your having set a timeout etc., and can't get in the BIOS either, then the latter looks like the real problem.

My problem was hardware related. I got it fixed following http://en.community.dell.com/support-fo … 44804.aspx
Nothing to do with Arch! Thank you all for your help!
