I use the free driver and my system runs now for round about 4 hours and X uses 12 MB and plasma desktop 24 MB. So I think only the catalyst driver has a memory consumption problem.

Damn... good numbers. What is your graphic card?

Excuse my poor English.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

FYI, now the consumption is nearly at the same level (X = 22 MB plasma = 30 MB). I have an ATI X700 mobility. The graphics card is very old and since KMS, I have a few problems with the performance (framerate droped around 50%). Hope this get fixed with the new X-Server and ati drivers.

Best regards!

You are saying that system is still working so could you try to login to it via ssh (from the other machine) and ie. restart X?

Interesting things here. I managed to connect to the system while it was locked. Here's what I found:
1. `free -m` reports over 1900mb free memory, so it's not strictly a memory leak like I previously thought it might be.
2. The first time I ran `top` it locked up my SSH session - nothing happened even when I pressed CTRL+C. After I closed the terminal window on my remote PC, I was able to SSH back to the machine again. A different time, the "sync" command locked up similarly and I had to close the ssh terminal and wait a while before connecting again. I was however able to reconnect after a short while.
3. I was able to killall wineserver and some other .exe processes that were running. However, I discovered that even if I did `kill -s KILL` with the PID of SC2.exe, it would not kill the process. It would simply return as if it had succeeded, but the process would still be there. This is the first I've seen -s KILL fail to actually kill something. I was similarly unable to kill X.
4. I was able to run `top` on my second try. It showed X using 100% of one CPU core, nothing else using more than a marginal amount of CPU.
5. ps ax shows that the SC2.exe process is in state "DL" which means "interruptible sleep, probably waiting for I/O". Meanwhile the X process is in currently running state. I was not able to restart X.
6. I was able to soft reboot the machine with `shutdown -r now`

Also i found a way to limit fps in SC2 - it is just a fud, it's solution for MacOS and apple's macbook where the problem of overheating also exist, but i believe it should work:
put those lines to variables.txt (in MacOS placed in ~/Documents/Blizzard/Starcraft II/variables.txt, so you have to search it on your own):

frameratecap=40
frameratecapGlue=30

Of course you can change values of this variables.

I added those lines to my Variables.txt file. It did appear to be having an effect (framerate in menus was a steady 30 instead of 59-60) but it did not stop or prevent the crashes at all.

Also instead of reseting it's safer to enable acpi support so you may press the power button and wait for system's halt - that way you will avoid any potential data lose.

I had tried getting ACPI working a different before, but it didn't work. I will try again with the acpid package! Thanks for the tip.

@mDuo13: if you are able to login via ssh when hardlock could you paste /var/log/Xorg.0.log and output of 'dmesg | grep fgl' command (before restarting X)?
If you arent able maybe /var/log/Xorg.1.log still exist and you can paste it here?

Both are pasted below:

Here's xorg.0.log:

No hehe... At this moment X = 794MB and plasma desktop = 347MB

I guees i should restart X server frequently tongue

When i have some time maybe i will test with free driver.

I´ve tested with free driver and still have this problem. So is not catalyst related, i think is a kde4/qt problem.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

xorg-server 1.9.0 is out. I'm compiling now, will report any problems.

Also, I believe both backclear and backfill patches are non-problematic for quite some time now, so I won't be uploading an "xorg-server-1.9-catalyst-maximize-fix" to AUR. Vi0L0's version with the backclear patch is enough smile

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Reporting back with results from my xorg-server 1.9.0 experience:

It doesn't work. Not even with the version number hack (tried reverting it back to 1.8.2). Here's the relevant part from Xorg.0.log:

[   116.773] (II) LoadModule: "fglrx"
[   116.773] (II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/fglrx_drv.so

[   116.873] (II) UnloadModule: "fglrx"

[ 116.919] (EE) No drivers available.
[   116.963]
Fatal server error:

I'm sure I'm missing something, but I've tried rebuilding catalyst, rmmod & modprobe fglrx but neither worked. Any ideas?

LOL, pretty strange... Did you maybe try to /etc/rc.d/your_dm restart ?

Not good... both xserver and fglrx know nothing about hardlock sad.

I am pretty sure i had this bug with old kde versions but before i had 8 gigs of ram and i didn't pay attention. With gnome-desktop i don't remember that Xorg high memory use.

You aren't missing anything. Catalyst isn't working with xserver 1.9 simply because it's not supporting it wink - xserver 1.9 got new ABI.
I'm sure i was writing about this problem. The good part of this story is that we don't need to wait for ages because of xserver 1.9 in ubuntu 10.10 smile.
Anyhow when new xserver will land in [extra] i will provide [xorg18] repo so we'll be able to use catalyst.
And yes - i'm pretty sure we won't see xserver 1.9 support before ubuntu 10.10 release.

Edit: Too bad that ATi Catalyst Beta Testing Program is closed sad - i would like to join it...

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Hi again!
I have a serious problem now and I hope you can help me with it...
As I already posted some pages before Catalyst 10.5 is the latest version that runs on my system. I installed it from the catalyst-10.5 repo.I am not able to figure out why. Newer versions will cause Xorg to receive a segmentation fault.
I wanted to do a system upgrade, which also included a kernel update. It was not possible to update the kernel because clyde said the dependency of catalyst is kernel26<2.6.35.
I thought it's not clever to exclude the kernel from the update. So I removed the catalyst 10.5 driver to update my system. After I updated I thought I might give the newest Catalyst release a try. So I added the catalyst repo and put comments in front of the 10.5 repo.
I executed

clyde -Syy
clyde -Suu

and then I installed the catalyst package. I used the command

aticonfig --initial --force

to create my xorg.conf and rebooted my machine.
The Xserver did not start, as I almost expected. I have absolutely no idea why it does not work with any catalyst version newer than 10.5
On the internet they write the solution is to do it with aticonfig --initial or aticonfig --initial --force. I tried both... with existing xorg.conf and without. No success. I also removed catalyst, did X -configure, installed catalyst again and executed the aticonfig --initial again. Still no xserver. It crashes with a segmentation fault. I also read, that if it still fails, people should check that the correct BUSID is entered in the xorg.conf
So I did

02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc M92 [Mobility Radeon HD 4500 Series]

So aticonfig set the busid correct as you can see below in the xorg.conf
By the way, if I set a different busid there is no segfault but xorg does not launch because of "No screens found"

Here is the content of /var/log/Xorg.0.log

I would be veeeery very glad if someone could help me. It would also be ok for now if I can use catalyst 10.5... I cannot install it because of

:: catalyst: requires kernel26<2.6.35

Is there any way to work around this? Of course I would prefer getting the newer catalyst also to work but I would be happy with 10.5 as well.
Thank you so much already!

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Well I managed to install Kernel 2.6.35 after deinstallation of Catalyst 10.5-2 from catalyst-10.5 repo, but now I have an old problem.
The thing is that I have some strange black squares around some windows and often in web browsers with flash player running. I solved this earlier after installing Catalyst 10.5-2, but now this problem appeared again.
Now, if I try to install it back I have this error:

warning: downgrading package catalyst (10.7-4 => 10.5-2)
resolving dependencies...
warning: cannot resolve "kernel26<2.6.35", a dependency of "catalyst"
:: the following package(s) cannot be upgraded due to unresolvable dependencies:
      catalyst

So, what now ? Is there some other version of this Catalyst or I am finally doomed with open source ATI which overheats my laptop ? Does new kernel fixes this issue with powersaving the GPU ?
Tnx inadvance

PS - I posted this on another topic, but it is closed, so I post here.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

It seems I solved the problem. Here is what I have to do:

* Shutdown kdm/gdm/X11 etc
* Login as root on the console
* Execute aticonfig --set-pcs-str=DDX,ForceXAA,TRUE
* Restart

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

@McFlow:
I dunno how to help you with issues of newer catalysts...
If you made some search of this problem and found nothing - i think you should post bugreport at Unofficial ATI Linux Driver Bugzilla Main Page.
Edit: what if you will move /etc/ati/control from 10.5 to newer catalyst? smile
If you want to use catalyst 10.5 then use this PKGBUILD and other needed files to build package. To do this - download and extract mentioned archive, 'cd' it and 'makepkg -ci' it as privileged user.

Ok. I will post the Bugreport now.
When I moved the control from 10.5 to a newer catalyst it was still the same hmm
What's this file supposed to do?

Thanks. That worked!

I dunno what /etc/ati/control do exactly (it's binary file) smile , all i know is that this file contain a "list" of supported hardware (and guessing here: maybe it's telling to the driver how_to/in_what_way control each gpu)

Edit: Along with bugzilla report you may also post your bug here (surprisingly they've got ArchLinux on the short list of unsupported distributions cool )

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

But why is it called xorg18 and not xorg19?

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Uhm... because it has xorg-server 1.8 in it? catalyst is not compatible with xorg-server 1.9 yet, so that's why this repo exists.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Catalyst 10.8 released: Changelog
Is is not yet available on amd.com but here.

Edit: I still get black boxes in Thunderbird and amdcccle shows I would use 10.7 ... :-/

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Thank you Radioactiveman smile

Aur and repo have been updated, like i said on aur:
I can see NO changes except OpenGL ES 2.0 and some not_so_important fixes
Just noticed: blur in kde4.5 is kinda working good now.

2 important notes:

If you are using libva and xvba-video packages then you need to reinstall them, and type this as root:
rm /usr/lib/xorg/modules/dri/*_drv_video.so

__catalyst isn't supporting xorg-server 1.9___ which just landed in [testing] repo and soon will be pushed to mainline
To avoid black screen use [xorg18] repository:
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ATI … repository

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

There is not artefact under firefox 4, contrary to firefox 3 with catalyst 10.7. I will try with 10.8.

Yes, but there is always a little latency by launching dolphin, konqueror... but I think it's a KDE problem.
