I'm seeing a few of these lines in my vsftp log every now and then:
Mon Aug 23 21:49:57 2010 [pid 2] CONNECT: Client "XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX"Well, I see them quite alot but they are usually followed by a login attempt. What is going on when there is only a connection being made? Ie no signs of the ip actually trying to log in. Are these port scans or anything else that I should worry about?

Basically, if anyone opens TCP connection on your FTP port then such line is written (you can try $ telnet localhost 21 , and see the same for 127.0.0.1). IMO, you may ignore them if there's not much of them, e.g. about 10 per day, and if you aren't a big server.
