I'm running Arch on my Asus EEE 1001PX, runs really smooth.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

Running Arch x86_64 since December 2009 on HP Compaq 6530b. All I can say - nice machine for work. I use it for web, programming, computer algebra and as a host for virtual machines (mainly Windows XP). Quite interesting is that I had much more troubles with Debian - last summer I even had to build custom 2.6.29 kernel to get wireless working.

Specs:

Intel Core 2 Duo P8600 2.4 GHz
RAM DDR800 4 Gb
HDD Hitachi 320 GB SATA-II
Intel Mobile GM45 graphics
Screen 14" 1280x800
Intel HDA (ICH9) audio
Intel Wireless WiFi 5100, Bluetooth adapter
CD/DVD RW drive, FireWire 400, ExpressCard, 56k modem

What is working out of box: almost everything.
What did require to do something: downloading firmware for WiFi from www.intellinuxwireless.org
What doesn't work: nothing.
What wasn't tested: FireWire (haven't got any device), ExpressCard (the same) and 56k modem.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

Arch 64 on ASUS K50AB.

Things work well, I didn't test everything, I suppose, these laptops have too many features/buttons that I never managed to test.
So, camera is upside-down but it can be fixed (it's inverted on Windows (tried Skype), too, that can't be fixed, afaik smile). Sound works with fine - the automatic switcher between line-out and speakers did not use to work months ago, this is already a forgotten issue. Wireless works. Frequency scaling works.  Lock screen, switch off display works, brightness buttons work, multimedia buttons work (XFCE+Pragha)... Bluetooth through USB works. I can burn CDs and DVDs.

Seems like most of it is in its place. I did not tested the SD card slot and an attached external monitor.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

Just got around to installing on old HP laptop (ze5600) from 2004 (i think)

-Intel Celeron 2.60 GHz
-768MB RAM
-40GB Hard Drive
-ATI Radeon IGP 345M Graphics Card
-Broadcom BCM 4306 Wireless

Most things work pretty well. The only thing is the wireless. b43legacy doesn't work very well. ndiswrapper+driver from hp.com is the way to go.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

running arch on HP G61-408CA (was about $500 CAD)

everything runs smoothly. no problems at all.

using the catalyst driver from catalyst repos.

working x264 accel with mplayer-vaapi (1080p plays with almost no cpu).
hdmi out works, audio needs a logout/login.
multi display with xfce is perfect, some weirdness with kde and desktop activities but is working well.

never got xbmc working though.

using kde + kwin compositing.

wireless works flawlessly with whatever the default drivers are. i use wicd.

Arch installed and works flawlessly on an HP G60-249WM. I have never tested the modem, but, everything else works.

I had to set this up using eth0 as the firmware does not seem to be available in the live setup environment (even though it is a selectable package).  Other than that, everything works as expected.  At work I use an external monitor via the VGA port, but have not yet tested the HDMI out port or the sound from HDMI.

I did have an interesting hangup with this laptop when I first got it.  I had ordered it with a Western Digital Blue Scorpio 1TB drive and it was completely unusable.  A lot of research found that some drives seem to have an NCQ problem with 64 bit Linux.  In fact I found a mammoth thread at LKML that spans about a year and a half with no resolution to the problem.  So I finally got one of these new Seagate hard drives that they bill as a "hybrid" drive since it has 4GB of flash on it.  Couldn't be happier with it - it screams.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

Finally I can add my brand new Samsung R580.
I was looking everywhere whether it can run linux, but I couldn't find any information about it, so I risked a little bit tongue
Definitely worth trying.
Wifi works out of the box, web camera and microphone also, I didn't test bluetooth (but I'm sure it will be okay too ). The only issue is brightness changing, it's really hard to find proper drivers. I managed to decrease backlight level to 4 (from 7, which is max) and I can completely turn off the backlight. It seems that some people really care about it and there will be something worth checking available soon big_smile
For everyone who's hesitating: I recommend buying this notebook smile
BTW
It's i5-430M CPU, Nvidia GT330M graphics card, Atheros wifi, 4 gigs DDR3 RAM and 500 GB SATA HDD

Re: Laptops which run Arch

I have a Toshiba Satellite T235D-S1345 that I bought cause there was a good discount on newegg. It runs pretty well with Arch x86_64 but there are a couple annoying little issues.

1) It will hang at boot unless I give grub the "acpi=off" option. This isn't really annoying anymore now that I've solved it, but it certainly was annoying before I found the fix in this thread.

2) When I use the touchpad, the cursor sometimes jumps to the top-right corner of the screen. I'm not sure what is triggering this, and it seems to happen pretty randomly about 50% of the time, regardless of the location or strength of the touch.

3) I haven't gotten sound to work, yet. My sound card is recognized by alsa, and I'm in the audio group and can run alsamixer and change the levels. No sound from any applications though, including speaker-test.

Update:
Sound is now working through the headphone port after adding "options snd-hda-intel model=auto" to my /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf. The headphone port is all I need since I just connect it to my guitar amp anyway.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

I would suggest the posters to give us an lspci in code tags plus the information about what is working/or not,so we can have a better see about what are the hardware specifications.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

HP dv4t ( http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=4652 )

Arch was installed last year in this computer. At that time, some small fixes were needed.

Sound: (note: hp-dv5 configuration)

~% cat /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf
#
# /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf (for v2.6 kernels)
#

options snd-hda-intel model=hp-dv5
options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=1

##

Wireless:

1 - Install broadcom-wl from AUR repo ( http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Wireless_Setup ).

2 - In /etc/rc.conf:

MODULES=(... !b43 !ssb ...)

and in /etc/rc.local:

## ssb must be loaded *after* wl
modprobe lib80211_crypt_tkip
modprobe wl
modprobe ssb
