Hello ![]()
I'm very happy with Arch Linux, but today, the first update since three weeks, pacman hangs for five minutes and counting. No CPU usage or so. Just hangs in my ps -ef.
Is this normal?

At the moment - yes:

Actually, no - not even at the moment. Our repo reorganisation is proceeding in the background, but that does not cause pacman to hang - it simply means that the mirrors are not syncing. You should still get output from pacman.
Culex - please do pacman -Syu --debug, paste the output in some pastebin e.g. pastebin.archlinux.org, and post the link here.

Forgot it. I'm usually not using these paste-bins. They're for me harder to read.
Anyway, edited.
Actually, it's working now.

I have a Thinkpad T22, which I use infrequently. Now I need to get a WiFi PCcard working (Netgear 511v2 with the Marwell chipset - boo) so I did a pacman -Suy to get the latest and greatest software. The upgrade was some 500MB and installation size over 1GB!
However, the pacman -Suy just killed the computer when checking the packages (nothing moved, all keys dead etc) - so I tried again. This time it came through quite a number of package checks, but then it died again. Since I was doing other work, I do not know exactly when, but that seems to vary. After this second attempt the Thinkpad does not boot properly any more.
My question is: is there a limit for upgrade installation size (maybe RAM dependent)?
Also, if someone has any advice for me I would be grateful.

Try this: do a
pacman -Sy
first. Then pacman -S the kernel (kernel26) and pacman *only*. fix any configuration file changes (.pacnew files), and reboot.
Then so
Pacman -Su
for the rest.

Thanks, I'll try that if the re-installation does not behave. Maybe a warning against "too great" updates, and these steps, should be included in the pacman manual and -Sh help text.

There's no such thing as a stupid question, but there sure are a lot of inquisitive idiots !
