I personally like blackwhite gtk, which isn't really all that dark, even though it has black in its name.

A world without what makes us, us. One without you or me.
A world with no differences, this is the world I see.

As a conclusion:
I was not fully satisfied with any of the proposed themes, but the closest one was Elementary.
So, I've modified it to enhance contrast (I don't get it, why would you want GRAY text on GRAY background?).
Changes:
Text color is real black, everywhere, including metacity title (tell me if I've missed something).
Color for selected items is more dark, for better contrast with white text on them.
Highlighted item on a panel recolored to match selected item's color.
This is how my desktop looks now:
You can grab my modified version of elementary here: elementary-contrast-mod.
