New sound card. Suggestions?

As you might know my computer seldom turns off and I am afraid the problem is from the audio card.
For example when I am using mplayer: the output seldom goes crazy showing lots of audio related errors, and I cannot change volume.

Anyhow is it worth a try, so my question is:
do you know a linux friendly 5.1 channels audio card? I have 6 analog speakers connected with three jacks; so the audio card should manage that.

Thanks

M-Audio cards are linux friendly in general. I'm not watching for market of audio cards now, so don't know modern models, but revolution 5.1 is known to work well.
