I'm gonna post you my PKGBUILD for newest chromium-dev in minutes so you may build it,
Edit: PKGBUILD with other needed files is here. Note that you need to download ~124M fat sources archive file to build it.
And maybe i'll also upload a package for x86_64 (within a ~10 minutes).
Edit: ok, here's the package, it's only ~16M fat, but i'm not promising it will work - maybe linker linked some specific for my system libs.

so, which package ?   chromium-dev from aur is ok or I absolutely have to take one of this package ??

thank you for your work again smile

This new functionality was introduced on the blog entry, and it's dated 27 Aug.
Now the chromium-dev on aur is older - version 7.0.503.1 showed on 25 Aug. I didn't even try to build it - I just used newest version 7.0.509.0 (i can see there's already 7.0.510.0 uploaded today) and posted here about what's working for me. Plus please note that this functionality is fresh - there's not many information about it and i've found no information about it on arch forums - because of this lack of informations i haven't risked possible waste of time (long compilation) on building 2 packages - older and newest - and just built newest package.
Anyhow if you've built chromium-dev from aur and gpu acceleration is working there then don't even mind to update.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Hi everyone,

I'm not sure if it the correct forum (nor topic...), but I'm guessing my problem is related in someway to the Catalyst Driver (or to my xorg.conf)

I have a nice two monitors setup on my work laptop, a 17 inch screen + 19 inch screen with a grand total virtual space of  1924x2880.

From some time now (I can't exactly recall when it all started)  windows and desktop icons started behaving strangely:

1.
screen1

With Docky, the below area SHOULD not be used by icons (like when there's a gnome panlel) At first I tought something was wrong with Docky, but even when it's not running, same behaviour.

2.

screen2n.png

Any popup window stays "below" the top main panel

It's a minor thing, I know (you can always kill windows from Docky without relying on the top left close button), but it's starting to become somewhat irritating smile

Anybody got a solution or point me in the direction where I could find one (aside from the obvious "search button")?

Thank you in advance.

p.s.: below is my xorg.conf (X.Org X Server 1.8.1.902 (1.8.2 RC 2)), with latest catalyst from repo.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Hi all,

Does anyone has a working configuration with compiz running. Could you share the settings, pls?

I have currently installed catalyst 10.8, compiz with direct rendering, backclear patched xorg. And Xorg crashes after a while if I try to run other opengl app sad
I tried removing xorg.conf, forcing XAA, still crashing sad

wooohooo! I've got great news for you!
GPU acceleration in newest chromium works absolutely amazingly great!

Even Microsoft's Demos for IE9 (to show ie9 acceleration like this one) works with highest framerate!

But... whats more important here in normal desktop using is that with it and v-sync enabled in amdcccle flash videos are tear-free now! No tearing/flickering at all with compositing enabled and at full screen! (tested with flashplugin and nspluginwrapper from multilib repo, and with both catalyst 10.7 and 10.8)

I'm running chromium-dev with those arguments:

chromium-dev --enable-gpu-plugin --enable-accelerated-compositing --enable-accelerated-2d-canvas

You can run it with webgl support:

chromium-dev --enable-gpu-plugin --enable-accelerated-compositing --enable-accelerated-2d-canvas --enable-webgl

and watch ie. this demo ;P

Ofcourse you can also add these arguments to Exec line of /usr/share/applications/chromium-dev.desktop file, here's example with extensions enabled:

Exec=chromium-dev %U --enable-gpu-plugin --enable-accelerated-compositing --enable-accelerated-2d-canvas --enable-webgl --enable-extensions

Important Edit: Ive found that running it with --enable-accelerated-2d-canvas argument could cause to system crash while viewing some pages like http://images.google.pl so feel free to remove it (although performance on some pages like those ms tests will drop)

Btw i've builded this chromium-dev package when i was using/testing open source drivers - but it should work good on catalyst, at least it's working good for me.
Ps. oss drivers are good, better than when i was using them before (0,5year ago) but i was catching some problems with flash videos when watching them on fullscreen (laggy after some time), also this gpu acceleration doesn't work on them.

cheers! smile

This work very well, here another page to test http://www.satine.org/research/webkit/s … stack.html
and the i686 chromium-dev package http://www.mediafire.com/?l3fc6knefi0eko1

Upgraded to Catalyst 10.8. Dunno what I was thinking - perhaps hoping for some reason that ATI would fix bugs rather than introduce new ones. I guess that was naive of me. Blackboxes bug didn't go away (fixed it by reverting to old 2D engine as previously mentioned) but now Starcraft 2 won't run under WINE. Getting messages like this:

 II.exe: xcb_io.c:506: _XReply: Assertion `!dpy->xcb->reply_data' failed.

(It seems cut-off; I've seen a couple variations, with different amounts of the to Starcraft II.exe trimmed from the start)

Anyway, Googling for the error message didn't turn up anything helpful, but I thought I'd ask around. Anyone else seeing this problem? Anyone else running SC2 successfully under Catalyst 10.8? If so, what card do you have? (Mine's a 5770.)

Further update - Apparently the Debian folks noticed this one too and think it's a problem with Catalyst 10.8.

Seems like the problem occurs when any app running under WINE attempts to fullscreen itself. (Doesn't matter whether WINE is emulating a virtual desktop or not.) =/

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

10.8 has been a total failure here. After 'upgrading' catalyst driver I can't play anymore any movie/video file without getting a totally-froze/hang machine with cold reboot as only solution
I did try all and everyone of the suggested fixes at the ATI/Catalyst wiki but system's still crashing hard everytime I play a movie and go into fullscreen and then into windowed mode back, minimize or unminize it, load another video file and so on; even rebuilding module -as suggested by wonder- didn't help. I'm reverting to 10.7 in search of some of the stability I lost 'upgrading'.

Thanks anyways Vi0L0 for your great work and phuck AMD/ATI, this was the last time I buy anything from them.

*UPDATE*: shifting back to 10.7 everything works great :)

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I get a Flickering when I watch a video using gl,gl2 or vaapi:gl as output. This disappears in full screen or if I disable K win Effects. Also Happens in Chromium 7.0.x when it uses GPU. If that is not bad, when I switch to another desktop the content without the window frame hangs onto the desktop I switch to. How do I get rid of this.
EDIT: Ans - Switch off kwin effects. Any other means? tried the ones in wiki nothing helps

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Hey ATi fellows...

I'll be switching to ATi in a few days, and was wondering if there was anything i can do to prepare my system in advance for the change? I'm currently using the proprietary Nvidia driver and i think i'll switch to the catalyst driver rather than the open source alternative. Obviously i can't install the driver now, since it conflicts with Nvidia, but is there much to do after installing the catalyst driver? Does it set up it's own config in xorg.conf.d such as the Nvidia driver does?

I've heard the ATi drivers are a pain in the ass, and i'd just like to prepare as best as possible before i make the switch.

Dunno if it's relevant, but i'm getting an HIS 5850, any known issues with this card?

Just read catalyst wiki. I believe that using [catalyst] main repository is a good idea, but if you'll notice any lags while using desktop environment - switch to [catalyst-10.7] repo.

big_smile so maybe we should call a vote here like: hd5850 vs gtx460? Naaah - it's useless, we already know the winner wink.

@Mountainjew:
i'm guessing that you chosen 5850 because of it's features and your target here is Windows use, but please do not negate opensource drivers - they are pretty good (with testing 2d/3d/video acceleration features) when you aren't using more complicated games/opengl apps. Also switching from [catalyst] repo to Perry3D's [radeon] repo is pretty easy.
Here is oss drivers forum thread: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=79509&p=1, and here is wiki: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ATI

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Yeah i'm switching to ATi primarily for windows gaming, since i prefer ATi cards. The only reason i ever got an Nvidia was for linux, but since i'll be keeping that box on linux permanently, i won't mind much about linux 3d performance. But i don't use many 3d features anyway, i run openbox and very few games, like Penumbra, Osmos, Doom 3 etc. So i'm not bothered much about performance, and i might consider the open source drivers. I'm sure i'll test both drivers out and decide smile

Thanks for the help ViOLO, i'll read over that stuff in the meantime big_smile

Then you'll have quite a lot things to fun with, you'll see, hahaha  ;-)
BTW, remember send Vi0L0 a cold six-pack irish beer for his great job, without him ATi Catalyst on Arch would be plain impossible :P

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Future of catalyst package: New automatic re-compilation method.

Request for Comments

I would like to introduce you a new way of auto re-compiling fglrx module which is basing on a system daemon.
This new method is fully provided by B. M. Kwapinski (xmL). Many many thanks to him!

All tasks served by a hook are done here by autofglrx daemon which is starting just after kernel's boot and is rebuilding fglrx module if kernel was updated.
So theres no need of using hook and no need of forcing pacman to install kernel26-headers package in first place.
xmL and me have alredy tested it. It is far better than a hook and it's working like a charm, but i would like to ask you for feedback before updating repositories and AUR.

So here are PKGBUILDs and other needed files to build new packages:
- catalyst 10.7
- catalyst 10.8

All previous hook's entries will be erased in the installation process.

Auto re-compilation is disabled by default, but all you have to do to enable it is:
- type as root

catalyst_build_module auto

  which will add autofglrx in the first position of DAEMONS array in /etc/rc.conf file;
- or to manually add autofglrx to DAEMONS array of /etc/rc.conf file
(please remember to add it before your_dm (gdm/kdm/etc), and without monkey (@) because it must NOT be started in the background).

'catalyst_build_module' works as always.

What if you start X with runlevel 5?

It's the same, X won't get started until all the "foreground" (without the monkey) deamons are started wink

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I don't like the idea about the daemon method, because a daemon needs to run always in the background and takes system resources while the fglrx modules only need to be rebuilt after a kernel upgrade. And I really don't want to have a daemon permanently run in the background just for one task which has to be accomplished only once every several weeks or months.

The daemon method would really be a waste of resources.

And it always takes time to starting the daemon at boot time, which means that booting the system takes unnecessarily longer every time.

So, please, keep the hook method and forget the daemon method.
