Are you by any chance using a cs46xx chipset? I have one too, and can't for the life of me get a mic to work.

I have the same problem, but only after updating to 2.6.11.x kernels. Used to work before that, now no-go. Or, rather, even with everything pushed to the max, all I hear is very loud noise and very, very faint input from the mic itself ...

It's not about setting volume to the max. You have to set mic or ac97 as a capture device (space in alsamixer) - read the thread I mentioned above.

I've tried everything you could possibly imagine. Now I just resign myself to the fact it won't work, which is a pity. That's what linux is all about! If I had the knowledge I'd try and fix it all up myself; as it is I'll be grateful for the rest my free system

Check the mixer settings. It might help if you posted what sound module you are using.

Oh, believe me, I did. It DID work for almost a year, after all, without any problems. Both tmadhavan and I use the cs46xx chipset, so I start wondering whether something's wrong with the kernel module ...

Tried this too ? (set 3 devices to capture - maybe also use aumix not alsamixer):

It's also described in alsa wiki docs

Hmm well I'll have a look when I get back from uni. I've tried everything though, I'll be surprised if I can get it working now.
Thanks anyway tho, I'll post back this arvo

*nod* Didn't change a thing.
Mind, it could have been a freak accident--i.e. my mic might have broken down around the same time I updated the kernel. I don't use it that often. The only reason I'm wondering about the kernel module is because tmadhavan seems to have the same issues as I do.

Yeh, I've always had them too.
I think the problem was present in other distros, and I've also tried several mics, so that's not the problem.
I would have liked to try it on the bloody SB Live card I bought, but of course, me being a dipstick, didn't notice it was 24bit. Naturally, there are no decent drivers, so I had to revert back to my Digifire, which I need anyway for firewire.
*sigh*

If you using ALSA, then it would help you
amixer sset Mic 100% cap mute

Yes, it could help other people. One thing with old threads is that, sometime, the problem has been fixed or that it is not relevant anymore because of newest versions of packages. I just wanted to point that in case you didn't see the date. Anyway, there is no harm done. 8)

Well, the problem is still there, I still have my cs46xx and my ca0106 (SB Live! 24). Neither have mic input working. Apparently Creative are witholding details that wauld allow ALSA to use tho SB mic input.
Anyone else sorted it out?
