The new Debian based Mint distro has been released.

Would you test it ?

I guess it's very like Sidux (which has many issues right now regarding Sidux eV etc), but... could it survive ?

I'm very close to all of the Mint dev team, and I've personally seen screenshots of their iso tests. It looks amazing and I myself will have to try it out sometime in the following weeks.

We have high hopes for it.

I'm pretty glad they changed to Debian as a base. It's far more stable and consistent than Ubuntu.

Yeah, I've always been a fan of the regular Ubuntu based Mint releases (but not as much as Arch of course), so I have a feeling this could be even better, since I've always liked Debian testing (and unstable) since it's rolling release and still stable. I plan on trying it in Virtualbox sometime soon.

Seeing as Mint is my favorite Ubuntu-based distribution (and, trust me, I don't like Ubuntu-based distros), and I've been excited over this since a rumor I heard around a year ago, I'll give it a shot! My past experience with testing was great, and Mint on Debian could only add to it.

In fact, I'm going to install it today!

wow, they really did it... For some reason or another, I think this project will go much further for the mint community as a simple 'test'. I'm definitely going to test it in a virtualbox

What does this add to Debian Testing other than pre-installed restricted software? Mint always seemed to do a lot of hand holding for those who don't want to learn, but this doesn't seem like it will hew to that philosophy:

For this reason, LMDE requires a deeper knowledge and experience with Linux, dpkg and APT.
Debian is a less user-friendly/desktop-ready base than Ubuntu. Expect some rough edges

So what does it add? It's not like Debian (even Testing) is all that difficult to begin with (if I can run it, anyone can).
It's not really like sidux (or whatever they're going to call themselves now) which tried to stabilize Sid, plus added kernel tweaks. I'm willing to try it, but not until I can see what the added value is.

It's being developed as an alternative edition to standard mint.

So, to answer your question, as of now, it's not a permanent switch, but who knows what the future holds.

It's Debian Testing with the perks that Mint adds to Ubuntu. If you're fine with a testing/Sid install you have, it's really not worth the switch, unless you just want to check it out.

That said, it ain't too bad.

I finally downloaded the iso because one of the devs was pestering me to test it. So, I booted it up and installed it next to Arch. Works like a charm.

I'm very close with all of the Mint team and know most of them on a first name basis. Yes, we are developing it as an alternative and an experiment with Debian as a base. With Debian Testing as a base, we have a rolling release style of updating and are less reliant on upstream. For now, it is only an alternative and will most likely only be developed as 32-bit LiveDVD until it is on par with the main edition. Then, I think we'll start considering "Is this better than using Ubuntu as a base? Should we switch to Debian?" That day might be pretty far away, though.

This is good news, maybe this will compete with Fedora. Fedora isn't 100% rolling, but they do release updates quite frequently. This might end up being a viable alternative to arch.

So, it is not really alternative.

Ubuntu, Gentoo, Slack, Fedora would all be alternatives however they would not be viable alternatives as they have different goals and missions. Also, the user base is much different.

However, I feel that Debian Mint can potentially be viable alternative.

Just tried Linux mint debian from live cd and seems to be ok. imo those who want a rolling release with less work on configuration side this is the distro to look into.

I haven't played around too much so far, but LMDE seems pretty quick and responsive on my system. Quick boot time into live environment.

I am usually not one to complain about cosmetic things in a (Linux) distribution because everything is customizable depending how deep you want to dig (usually not very deep)...but that GNOME start menu is horrible IMO.

I have this installed on a separate extended partition on my HDD. Fast response and the same kind of "just works with everything out of the box" I've come to expect from Mint the past few years.

I think this could be something important, like "rolling release for the masses". It could even be the new mainstream model for linux (and others?) releases, a bit like repositories have become a mainstream model of software management under the name of "appstores".

In any case I think I will use it as the "distro to install in wife/parents/etc" computers. Install once and then just update occasionally, instead of having to reinstall the same computer every 6 months/year.
