[SOLVED] My new SSD and the alignment thingy ..

Hey fellas,

I just received my new Intel X25-M G2 and I'm wondering how to align the partitions correctly.

My layout:

(grub-partition?)
/boot ext2 75MB
/ btrfs 15GB
/home btrfs remaining

Since I wanna use btrfs I'll use the latest archboot installer, which comes with features like grub2 and GPT.

What about the grub2 partition?
So what do I need to considor to create my partitions "aligned"?
Start positions / end positions?
Do I need to align the filesystem somehow as well?

Thanks in advance
Oli

AFAIK, the partition alignment issues are with new platter HDD's with 4k blocks, not with SSD's....

SSD partition alignment is covered in the wiki:

Well all the thinks you mention need to be done by fdisk.
But I can't use GPT with fdisk, so how do I set the sector etc size?

I've never used GPT so I can't help you there.  Perhaps someone else?

Re: [SOLVED] My new SSD and the alignment thingy ..

For GPT, use gdisk from extra repo. For documentation check http://rodsbooks.com/gdisk/ . You might find this article useful although it does not talk about SSDs specifically http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/linux … tor-disks/ . Although I do not use an SSD or a 4K HDD, I do use gdisk and grub2. The best partition alignment size would be 1 MB (possible with GParted 0.6.2 in case of GUI tool). Gdisk by default aligns partitions by 1 MB and Parted's optimal alignment option will also help.
