Current ATI drivers?

Hi,

in 2006 I switched from ATI to NVIDIA because of the better drivers.

Now I'm thinking about a new desktop PC. It's only used for office applications so I'm thinking about an onboard solution. There's an ATI HD4250 on many boards for the Athlon II X2 but I'm hesitating because of my ATI experiences.

So, how are the current drivers? Are they better now or still much inferior to the nvidia drivers?

Re: Current ATI drivers?

Many people are still recommending nvida over ati, and catalyst (closed-source proprietary drivers) if your want ati, because of their higher efficiency.

Re: Current ATI drivers?

You'd better stay with Nvidia.

Re: Current ATI drivers?

Hi People!

How good is the ATI/AMD support for Linux? (drivers for video onboard specifically) and the open source driver?

Re: Current ATI drivers?

Catalyst lags behind nVidia proprietary drivers.

However, ATI open-source drivers are in a much better state than nVidia's obfuscated (and obsolete) nv driver, although nouveau will probably change that.

Re: Current ATI drivers?

In my opinion, ATI's GPUs are better, but nVidia's drivers are better.

Everything you could ever want to know or ask about the current state of ATI video under Linux is here:

I recommend that you read the thread backwards.

No matter how many times you say that, more new members will eventually ask the same question again without taking any note to search first.

Sadly, that's true.

I have merged 2 threads here. Hopeful, that the search feature will be used more by everyone.

Re: Current ATI drivers?

Thanks for your replies.

As RetroX said currently the ATI GPU are better or rather nvidia cards are very expensive since there're mor high end cards available.

So, any recommendations for a not so expensive mid-end PC with an nvidia card (or an ATI card you've good experiences with)?  Mainly used for Office but some games should run, too (e.g. Starcraft 2, Drakensang 2 and GuildWars 2 (when available ;b )).

Re: Current ATI drivers?

Ok, currently I have to chose between a Radeon 5750 and the new GTS 450.

What would you buy with the current (and upcoming) drivers in mind?

Re: Current ATI drivers?

1. The Nvidia one
2. I would recommend GTX460, instead of 450. It has better price to permormance ratio.
