Recently received an email from an arch admin claiming that my CONKY script took up 12GB of bandwidth per week, apparently 42% of the main page traffic. Here is what was causing this issue:
${rss http://archlinux.org/packages/ 1 item_titles 10 }
(or something similar... I deleted the line as soon as I received the email)
If you don't know already, the above downloads a new feed every second. EVERY SECOND. No wonder they were upset. I am setting up a $40 donation so I don't seem like a total ass. Anyways, I didn't mean to cause any issues and I hope the above helps someone avoid mistakes / bandwidth drainage.

Well, we truly appreciate your immediate response in correcting the situation. and the $40 is also truly appreciated
This here seems more appropriate in the Forum and Wiki section.
There's no such thing as a stupid question, but there sure are a lot of inquisitive idiots !

You don't need to feel too bad, it was me that sent you the message. I'm surprised by the quick response.
Honestly, much of the fault lives upstream with the Conky plugin and its inability to solicit a "304 Not Changed" response by just including some headers. If you want to do good in the world, you might want to open a bug with them.

Haha, this community gotta be the best ever. I cannot think of any other distro having a person unintentionally "DDOS"ing the main website, taking up 42% of the traffic, then come back and say you're sorry.
Don't feel bad, these guys gotta be prepared for when the world realizes arch, and linux, is the way to go.

Hopefully the table mapping static IP addresses to email addresses is well secured

You do realize every time you post on the BBS the IP address gets logged? It's not exactly rocket science to try and trace down a user behind a particular IP address for developers and admins here.

I hope everyone has their tin-foil hats securely attached to their heads!!

That's a fairly impressive effort on anthonyclark's behalf -- if you were in Australia/New Zealand, you would have noticed this on your end of the connection!! :P
