Forcing wlan0 to use 802.11a - Wireless - networkmanager/iwconfig

At school the network use both "a" and "b/g". The "b/g" band is always crowded and or stuck at "b" speed.  So I want to use the uncrowded "a" band.

Both network use the same essid. But there is both "a" and "b/g" access point. How to I force networkmanager/iwconfig to connect using 802.11a?

Re: Forcing wlan0 to use 802.11a - Wireless - networkmanager/iwconfig

man iwconfig
man iwlist

Look at the sections for modulation.

I've look at that but if I do that:

sudo iwconfig wlan0 modulation 11a

SET failed on device wlan0 ; Operation not supported.

The chip is AGN and the network support it.

I think you should set your channel first, that's how I tried it when I first set up my 802.11n AP, but then again I have separate 2,4 GHz and 5 GHz APs smile.

The channels for 802.11an are like 48, 52, etc. Telling iwconfig which channel to use might help. You can also override the rate setting iwconfig uses, but since bandwidth doesn't differ between 802.11a and 802.11bg, I don't know if that's really useful.

Re: Forcing wlan0 to use 802.11a - Wireless - networkmanager/iwconfig

Like I said the bg is crowded, according to IT 5Ghz resist better to interference.

However, it's not the point. I tried setting channel, it accepted the command, still unable to iwconfig wlan0 modulation 11a.

I might have a clue:

sudo iwlist wlan0 modulation

"unknown modulation information."

Could there be a problem with my driver? I use default Arch driver. I works pretty well expect for that specific problem.
