Thinkpad T410 Arch Installation Questions

Yay for first post!

I am a content owner of a T410 w\ integrated graphics (currently running Windows 7), but am looking to dual boot with Arch Linux for less resource overhead/longer battery life/xmonad/etc.

I have found only one guide[1] to doing this and it says to chain load GRUB from the Windows boot loader. I was wondering why couldn't GRUB just be installed on the MBR or on /dev/sda1 - SYSTEM_DRV (the boot partition for Windows 7). Is this the best way to do it or is there a preferred or optimal way of resolving boot loading?*

*Note I want to keep the recovery partition and thus am forced to install Arch all on an extended partition, as done in the guide.

I am also considering formating the root partition in ext2, as no journaling = less hard drive activity = longer battery life. I am aware (or at least have been warned) of the dangers of data-loss in doing this. I was hoping for some opinions for/against.

Are there any other issues I should be aware of?
Cheers.

Thanks, but most of the hardware described seems to not apply to the T410 sad.
I've searched both the forum and wiki for T410 specific instructions, but didn't find anything substantial.

Also, did I post in the right forum?

Re: Thinkpad T410 Arch Installation Questions

Hello everyone!

I am in the exact same situation right now, but i don't have the boldness to format the whole drive of my t410 (just arrived yesterday).

But maybe i found a solution for your/our problem:

http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Talk:Rescue_and_Recovery

The text in the box says that it has something to do with the Rescue and Recovery.

The Master Boot Record (MBR) must be configured properly for the
Rescue and Recovery application to function properly.  When possible,
the Rescue and Recovery application attempts to ensure the proper
configuration of the MBR.  This can only occur if the Rescue and
Recovery application is installed after other applications that
requires the MBR.

Can you share your experience with us, it would be interesting how your installation worked?

Re: Thinkpad T410 Arch Installation Questions

I ended up just making a recovery dvd from the pre-installed software and throwing Ubuntu 10.04 on it with the default partitioning scheme that Ubuntu suggests.

Ok, thanks for the info. It works pretty good for me so far. This BCDEdit tool is quite handy and the only disadvantage that i see at the moment is, that the usable space on my HDD is small. Hope to fix the issue with the ext4 filesystem on win7.
