Is ArchLinux good as a minimal server oriented distro ?

Hi,

Am a ArchLinux newbie and stumbled on it while looking around for good, well-supported, actively-developed Linux distro, which can be used as a minimal (stripped-down to bare essentials) server, for "Appliance" type usage. The other alternative I am actively considering is the Ubuntu Server JeOS (Just-enough-OS).

The appliance use-case is quite typical, and commonly found on cloud / Infrastructure-as-a-Server applications. When I say server-oriented, I mean that all Desktop type applications and unnecessary daemon/services are not required.

Any guidance on how to go about this minimal server setup, would be highly appreciated.

regards,
BDutta

Some reading on Arch for a server:
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=104185&p=2
http://www.archserver.org/

As far as setting up a minimal server, Arch starts out as a minimal install and you install whatever you want on top of that, so there aren't any extra useless things installed by default. For setting up, you would want to check out the wiki, in particular the install guides:
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Beginners%27_Guide
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Off … tall_Guide

Reading through those should get you a good idea of what a setup does, how it starts with a minimal system, and how you have complete control over what daemons you have running.
