Re: black screen after install nvidia

Have you tried changing to tty1 when the screen is black (push ctrl+alt+F1), from there you can kill X and save you rebooting.

Logs might be useful, /var/log/xorg.0.log would be a good place to start, where there is an (EE) at the beginning of the line is where an error has occurred.

By another driver package do you mean the Nouveau driver? I found they worked when the nvidia driver did not.

Did you run nvidia-xconfig after installing the proprietary driver?

I hope you mean in the "that's the problem" way.

Re: black screen after install nvidia

Depending on the nvidia driver that you are using, nvidia doesn't work with xorg 1.9. You will have to either use nvidia-beta or use an open source driver like nouveau

Re: black screen after install nvidia

It makes it easier for others to help if you mention the use of beta/aur stuff in your first post.

Looks lile nvidia-beta does not create the modprobe config file to blacklist nouveau:
http://aur.archlinux.org/packages/nvidi … a/PKGBUILD
vs
http://repos.archlinux.org/wsvn/package … 6/PKGBUILD

Try if blacklisting nouveau helps ("echo "blacklist nouveau" >> /etc/modprobe.d/nouveau_blacklist.conf" and reboot).

EDIT: hmm, blacklisting is done by nvidia-utils-beta, so you should the have the file already.

Re: black screen after install nvidia

Just out of interest... was the screen completely black? or was there a very nearly black cursor blinking in the top left corner? I came across that last night when installing Arch onto an AMD Athlon 64 and 7300GS combo... I was using the free driver, and swapped to the nvidia-173xx driver and running nvidia-xconfig worked where Xorg -configure hadn't. The free driver was complaining about a module having a lock on my graphics card, or something similar (yeah, nice and vague wink ).

Although, being a relative newbie to Arch I could have just messed something up along the way. Tonight's project is to decide on and install a widow manager, so my X experience is more featured than just popping up a VLC client so I can watch a movie... look for some moronic posts in the newbie corner tomorrow wink
