Wireless frequently dropping - No probe response

Fresh install of ArchLinux, after running pacman -Syu.

Upon login:

iwconfig wlan0 essid "..."
dhcpcd wlan0

At this point, I am connected successfully. As long as the network is kept active, e.g. downloading a file, pinging the router every 2-3 seconds, the connection is stable. However, once the network is allowed to idle for maybe 15-30 seconds, the connection drops.

No probe response from AP 00:0f:66:21:c5:cd after 500ms, disconnecting.

Don't think it's a power management issue, since power management is off, but I tried in any case.
iwconfig wlan0 power off:

Error for wireless request "Set Power Management" (8B2C) :
    SET failed on device wlan0 ; Operation not supported.

iwlist scan successfully displays all the networks in my area, including my own. No other network shares the same channel as mine.

Note that I can easily reconnect with the following:

iwconfig wlan0 essid "..."

Would appreciate very much if someone could help me with the problem, short of running ping in the background.

The following additional information might be useful:
I am using netcfg to manage my network profiles.
The network is open; Neither WEP or WPA is involved.
My lappie is about 2-3 metres away from the wireless router.
Kernel version is 2.6.32-ARCH.
The problem exists on kernel version 2.6.30 (before I updated).

Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 4965 AG or AGN [Kedron] Network Connection (rev 61)
Wireless driver:
local/iwlwifi-4965-ucode 228.61.2.24-2
    Intel wireless firmware for IPW4965 (iwlwifi driver)

any word on what this is all about?  i've got the same problem with exactly the same criteria.  sorry if this bump is pointless, this is my first post.
