[solved] iwlist scan gives no ESSIDs

hey there,

i am trying to get my intel 3945ABG wireless connection working.

when i run iwlist wlan0 scan, for all listed cells, ESSID=""

some info so far:
-installed the packages wireless_tools and linux_firmware as per the Wireless Setup arch wiki page.
-iwconfig lists information for wlan0, and the little light on my wireless switch is on
-running "sudo iwlist wlan0 scan" gives me a list of ~5 cells, different mac addresses, etc, but no essids??

any suggestions? am i doing something really stupid?
