I think this happened after last update on network-manager.
nm-applet --sm-disable
** (nm-applet:7942): WARNING **: <WARN> request_name(): Could not acquire the NetworkManagerUserSettings service.
Error: (9) Connection ":1.45" is not allowed to own the service "org.freedesktop.NetworkManagerUserSettings" due to security policies in the configuration file
There is nothing in daemon.log about any errors.
Runnig nm-applet works with root.

I did everything from wiki before, and now again.
It does not help.

What DE/WM are you using? This looks like you need to launch x with a dbus-launch and/or ck-launch-session in .xinitrc. I think gdm/kdm start all this stuff automatically, but slim or a simple startx command do not.

For some reason .xinitrc exec line was not as it should be.
I just made new .xinitrc and ck session works as it should.
Now nm-applet starts, but it is not usable. As user I can not connect to any network.
Downgrading to 0.8.1-2 (both, daemon and client) fixes the problem.
I would do more reasearch on this with new version, but I need network manager now.

If you are using [testing], try downgrading consolekit to the version in [extra].

paste ~/.xinitrc
Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

paste ~/.xinitrc
Nothing special
exec ck-launch-session syndaemon -t -i 2 & openbox-session

that is pretty much the problem. you are doing it wrong.
you only run syndaemon with ck-launch-session.
you should do
exec ck-launc-session dbus-launch openbox-session

Ok, thanks for the tip.
But it does not fix the problem, nm-applet 0.8.2 is still not usable (at least as user).

you should do
exec ck-launc-session dbus-launch openbox-session
I was getting the same error and
exec ck-launch-session dbus-launch startxfce4
got mine working. Not sure if this might have slipped by, but wonder's text has a typo.

I just reverted back to wicd. It is archaic but it gets the job done, even without keyring.
And I checked for typos, everything was fine. And reinstalled, still got the same error.

Oh, cmon this is funny.
I cant see anything wrong with it. Maybe something is wrong in /etc/dbus-1 conf files?
Now the same thing happened to wicd, after I upgraded it to latest bzr version.
Edit:
Fixed by deleting /etc/dbus-1/wicd and reinstalling it.
Same thing did not work for network manager.

I've lost my ability to connect to available wireless networks using networkmanager too. Here's the bug report:

SOLVED: All i had to do was delete the wireless profile i was trying to connect to, then after that it worked and it recreated the profile. I'm guessing you know how to delete a wireless profile in netoworkmanager.
Does this work for you or should I leave that bug report open for you Ammon?

I confirm a bug. I can`t connect to any of wireless network trough networkmanager-applet. Nothing is displayed and stored in any of log files.
Deleting profiles did`nt do nothing.
Manual connect with iwconfig etc does the job.
It`s happened after last update.
