[Solved] AUR Helper recommendation

Been awhile since I've looked into it but I've read a couple of posts in the past week that went away from yaourt.  Still using yaourt myself and it seems to do well but I wanted to ask, is it a general momentum that people are using another AUR helper?  I'm not trying to start a flame here because I'm using yaourt currently and it seems to be doing well but I've been away so I haven't really heard any news, seen trends... about what people are generally using.  No flames please, I'm just trying to keep up to date.

Re: [Solved] AUR Helper recommendation

Clyde and Bauerbill are two that I see mentioned frequently.

Personally, I like surfraw smile

Nowadays I use cower + makepkg. I used to use packer before.

Re: [Solved] AUR Helper recommendation

Shameless plug for my aurget.  If you want an aur helper for _just_ the aur (i.e. doesn't replace pacman), I feel it's the best.

Re: [Solved] AUR Helper recommendation

I went yaourt -> packer -> clyde but now back to yaourt because it's faster than clyde since the package-query backend.

Going to check out cower now smile.

Wow, cower is pretty sweet, nice and simple. I'm sold.

clyde -Ss firefox-pgo 0.32s user 0.14s system 44% cpu 1.038 total
cower -s firefox-pgo 0.01s user 0.00s system 1% cpu 0.951 total
yaourt -Ss firefox-pgo 0.23s user 0.15s system 33% cpu 1.142 total

They all basically do the same thing... so I just use what's fast and light on dependencies.

Slurpy ftw!

But but - don't we have this kind of thread already? There's some collectibles thread about all AUR helpers, past und present.

Re: [Solved] AUR Helper recommendation

I'd go for brisbin's aurget as well. It keeps my official repos/packages separate from aur and I like that.

I use aurget. I like the fact that I can keep the official repos and AUR separate. I never really felt like using those swiss army knives you guys call AUR helpers tongue

Re: [Solved] AUR Helper recommendation

I'm sure all the rest have these options but these are the reasons I liked it
in comparison to yaourt, aurget is:

    - simple (KISS)
    - a bash script (approximately 1000 lines)
    - code is very clean
    - similar output as pacman
    - similar colours as pacman-color
    - options are similar to pacman
    - -Sp prints the PKGBUILD for a package
    - --devel option updates any VCS (git/bzr/hg etc) packages
    - fast
    - easy to spell wink

Re: [Solved] AUR Helper recommendation

I went slurpy -> cower. It just searches, shows info, downloads and updates from the AUR, no need to subsume pacman and makepkg. Also it is small and fast.

Re: [Solved] AUR Helper recommendation

I use yaourt at the moment, for a few reasons:

- It lists the recent comments from the AUR page for whatever package you're installing
- You can selectively install packages during a complete upgrade, in case you don't want to wait for that one big package to compile just yet
- It asks for confirmation enough times to remind me I'm doing this at my own risk smile

I've played around with clyde, tupac, bauerbill, and cower, and they've all got their ups and downs.  Play around yourself and see what you like.

Have either of you guys checked out pacsync yet?  I've been meaning to give it a try; it apparently allows a user to create virtual metapackages to aid organization.

Re: [Solved] AUR Helper recommendation

These are all pretty neat programs.  I like aurget however the first initialization was a bit slow (hmm, might be for better to be sure things get done right [which it does]).  cower looks good too but I think I'm just lazy to learn a new syntax (that might change because it's speed is impressive).  Because I'm lazy I'm going to stick with yaourt longer just because I'm able to update my system with just one command.  Thanks for the tips and update guys.
