Premium Mirror

Hey guys/gals. I am trying to update to the latest libvpx 0.9.5 and my preferred mirror is out of date (this has happend many times before, one mirror I used was weeks out of date), which led me to think of an idea. What if arch had a premium repo that was fast (2mb+) and always up to date that users could pay for? I would be willing to pay ($5-$10 a month, or $75-$90 a year) for that as long as the proceeds went to pay for the bandwidth costs and/or arch development. Arch is a great distro, but sometimes the mirrors are either out of date, or too slow (the official repo is capped at 50k, which is really slow.) For example, my current mirror is in Belgium (I live in Santa Clara, CA). It is the fastest mirror I could find. Just an idea, i'm not sure if the community/developers would agree. In any case, I just wanted my voice heard in my support for paying for a premium repo (I have already donated.)

I like the idea... Personally I wouldn't use it, but I think it could be a good income source for the devs

Use a tool like powerpill that can use multiple mirrors and donate directly to Arch?

Look here http://www.archlinux.org/mirrors/status/ and just choose an up to date mirror?

Thats not the official repo. It is a mirror like all others.

I did that just now, but I would prefer not to have to do that. I would like to have a very fast up-to-date mirror at the ready when I'm ready. I am willing to pay for it.

kernel.org always maxes my connection speed, which might not be the fastest, but it's the one that's worked the best for me, not to mention it staying reasonably up to date. Have you tried that mirror?

The domain is, but the mirror isn't treated any differently to any other mirror when syncing from the 'master' repo.

After having mirrors go stale on me a few times, I have often wished for a donation funded premium offical mirror like Demizer describes, but I have always been hesitant to suggest it.

This would never really work, because everyone is located in different parts of the world. Therefore a mirror in the United States which is super fast, could be as slow as dial up for someone over seas. There could also be a considerable speed difference just between the west and east coast of the states.

+1 for using powerpill (should max your bandwidth, gets the latest mirrors for downloads, etc)

You can just donate to me or to Arch in my name if you're itching to burn money.

My University hosts an Arch mirror (at my request), makes updates from on campus nice and fast over the 802.11n network here.
