Compiz doesn't work.

I've installed Compiz Fusion, but it doesn't work. Whenever I try to start compiz;

compiz (core) - Fatal: Root visual is not a GL visual
compiz (core) - Error: Failed to manage screen: 0
compiz (core) - Fatal: No manageable screens found on display :0

Same on fusion-icon too. What should I do?

Re: Compiz doesn't work.

Depends, either pass on compiz or install nvidia drivers...

Re: Compiz doesn't work.

If think he'll need the 96xx series.  Dunno if they work w/ the latest Xorg.  Can certainly try.  A 3rd option would be to upgrade the card to something that uses the nvidia series like a 8 or 9 or GT series card... but that costs $.

Re: Compiz doesn't work.

Actually, nouveau was the only driver that worked.

Why? As the name suggests, "Open source 3D drivers for Nvidia".

Re: Compiz doesn't work.

Nouveau does indeed work with Compiz.

It requires 10-monitor.conf and 20-nouveau.conf to be present in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d. If you have set these up correctly (refer to Xorg and Nvidia pages on the wiki), try using the compiz-check package from the AUR to check your setup.

It says that I have no rendering method in use.

I stand corrected smile

Kind-of wink Perhaps they should work, as the other open source drivers do, without the need for fiddling around with those two files... But hey...

Re: Compiz doesn't work.

I tried the OS driver.  It needs to mature before it's usable with compiz -- at least on my system (8400GS).  VERY slow in comparison to the closed-source drivers.

Do you have the nouveau-dri package installed? Is there anything in Xorg.0.log that might shed some light on it? But my guess is that you're missing nouveau-dri (its an optional dep. iirc)

I've had it running on a 6100 and a 8600, but I don't have many effects enabled on my portable installation... I've noticed that it doesn't handle opacity well either. It gets the job done for basic use, at least.
