Unable to suspend - pm-suspend doesn't work?

heya,

I have a Lenovo X200 tablet, with Arch_64 installed, and I appear to be unable to suspend it.

This is running KDE 4.6, hal-less.

Attempting to suspend in KDE seems to do nothing.

Running a dbus/uPower command didn't seem to do anything

[victorhooi@narsil-arch services]$ sudo dbus-send --system --print-reply --dest="org.freedesktop.UPower" /org/freedesktop/UPower org.freedesktop.UPower.Suspend
method return sender=:1.9 -> dest=:1.36 reply_serial=2

It flashes the screen once, then spits out that second line above.

I also tried running pm-suspend manually from a console, it seemed to flash the screen black once, and Wicd lost its network connection, but otherwise nothing.

Are there any other tests I can run to figure out why suspend is not working?

Cheers,
Victor

What size ram are you using?

You're just jealous because the voices only talk to me.

Re: Unable to suspend - pm-suspend doesn't work?

heya,

I have 4Gb of RAM. Swap file is 2Gb.

The weird thing - this all worked before the re-format, although the major change is I'm now on KDE 4.6 (and hence [testing] as well, since that is required by [kde-unstable]).

When I use pm-suspend, it does flash the screen black very quickly, but then goes back to where it is - however, Wicd does drop its connection, so does that mean that it suspended, but then just resumed? Or that it failed to resume at all? I tried looking for a /var/log/acpid file, couldn't find any such file - any idea where acpid might be sending its logs? Or where I can get more verbose output from pm-suspend?

Cheers,
Victor

Re: Unable to suspend - pm-suspend doesn't work?

heya,

I'm pasted my /var/log/pm-suspend.log file below, in the hopes it might help. This was run from the console (i.e. init/runlevel 3), nothing seemed to happen, pm-suspend didn't return anything, just returned straight away.

Re: Unable to suspend - pm-suspend doesn't work?

heya,

Just noticed that somebody else seemed to have a similar error - however, I can't seem to find a solution on that thread:

Re: Unable to suspend - pm-suspend doesn't work?

heya,

I found another thread that seems to have a similar problem:

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=107046

I did try the fix suggested in there (adding SUSPEND_MODULES to /etc/pm/config.d/foobar)

However, when I try to do a "sudo pm_suspend" now, it goes to a black screen, with a white underscore character in the top-left. System is still powered on and spinning, Caps-lock key works, but nothing else seems responsive, had to manually pull power.

Output of /var/log/pm-suspend.log below:

Re: Unable to suspend - pm-suspend doesn't work?

heya,

I've upgraded to 2.6.37 (from [testing]), and it seems I can now suspend using

sudo pm-suspend

from either the console (init 3), or within KDE.

However, if I try to suspend within KDE using the "Sleep" option from the KDE menu, it doesn't seem to work - simply goes to a lock screen.

Very curious. Has anybody else experienced this, or might know why this is?

Cheers,
Victor

Re: Unable to suspend - pm-suspend doesn't work?

My Lenovo T400 has a similar problem in that it does try to suspend and then fails. The behavior is pretty much the same from the KDE (4.5.5) menu or pm-suspend: It seems to try, even the sleepy led blinks for a moment, then nothing, it falls right back into normal operation.

The most interesting line I found was in /var/log/errors.log:

Jan  9 08:09:03 vinnie kernel: legacy_suspend(): pnp_bus_suspend+0x0/0x80 returns -5
Jan  9 08:09:03 vinnie kernel: PM: Device 00:0a failed to suspend: error -5
Jan  9 08:09:03 vinnie kernel: PM: Some devices failed to suspend

I am using the current stock kernel: Linux vinnie 2.6.36-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT...

Re: Unable to suspend - pm-suspend doesn't work?

I'm still having this issue after as -Syu today, which upgraded the kernel to 2.6.37. I am using a Lenovo Thinkpad T500. I was able to suspend successfully under Ubuntu 10.10. I tried doing both pm-suspend and pm-hibernate as root; both result in the moon-shaped "Suspend" light flashing briefly, and the laptop waking back up. Like others, the relevent errors seem to be (in /var/log/pm-suspend.log):

/usr/lib/pm-utils/pm-functions: line 298: echo: write error: Input/output error

and

/usr/lib/pm-utils/pm-functions: line 317: echo: write error: Input/output error

Also, the -Syu today installed KDE 4.6. In KDE 4.5, choosing "Sleep" from the "Leave" menu resulted in the same behavior as pm-suspend as root. Now, it and other buttons like "Shut Down" do absolutely nothing. I'll post again if I figure anything out.

Re: Unable to suspend - pm-suspend doesn't work?

I've noticed that, since the KDE4.6 upgrade,

dbus-send --system --print-reply --dest="org.freedesktop.UPower" /org/freedesktop/UPower org.freedesktop.UPower.Suspend

when run as an ordinary user also acts similarly to pm-suspend run as root, except that this command also disconnects the wireless connection.

Re: Unable to suspend - pm-suspend doesn't work?

I've got a similar problem sad.

I've got no X server installed (just using the box as server, so I don't need a X server). Neither pm-suspend nor pm-hibernate work. While pm-suspend seem to do nothing at all, pm-hibernate at least refreshes the screen, although no modules get unloaded (still have access via ssh).

Here is my pm-suspend.log:

[root@nas ~]# cat /var/log/pm-suspend.log

Seems that the machine is getting awake before actually suspending. Maybe a (major) bug within the kernel/pm-utils?

Re: Unable to suspend - pm-suspend doesn't work?

It now works for me. I had to reinstall the new kernel with pacman -Sy kernel26 (for some reason I was still running 2.6.36 even though I had already updated) and then reboot again. I can suspend as expected; I haven't tested hibernation.
