Question for expets: Hard disk is failing, what is the best procedure?
I amexperiencing hard disk problems and I think they are unfortunately related to a harddisk which is slowly failing.
After accessing some files I got this in the dmesg: http://pastie.org/1434584
If I do
smartctl -a /dev/sda
I get: http://pastie.org/1434587
If I do fsck, there are no problems. But if I access the same files from an ubuntu partition on the same computer, I get the same messages in dmesg.
Conclusion: the harddrive is beginning to make strange things (it is only 3 years old...).
My question for the hardware experts is: what is the best procedure to follow in these cases? I have read somewhere there is a way to 'disable' some sectors. What is the best 'solution' (apart from buying a new hd)?

yes, thanks, I have already several backups. rsync is my friend since years.
any other idea?

This is going no where fast. If the hardware fails there is hardly much you can do about it other than
1) use it till it dies,
2) donate it
3) trash it.
Options that you probably already knew about.
