Hey, this is my first real arch install.
I am running an ATI hd5850, and I downloaded the drivers from ATI. After I installed them (seemed to go fine), I rebooted, now I get loaded right into a shell instead of the graphical login and if I try to manually start gdm I get an error:
** (gdm-binary:1847): WARNING **: Failed to acquire org.gnome.DisplayManager: Connection ":1.10" is not allowed to own service "org.gnome.DisplayManager" due to security policies in the configuration file
** (gdm-binary:1847): WARNING **: Could not acquire name; bailing out
any ideas where to go here? I just made the switch from ubuntu because I was having a similar problem, but I tried older drivers and it semi worked. I figured a more clean version of linux would be easier to troubleshoot.

What exact drivers are you using ?
Instead of trying the ATI drivers, have you tried using open source drivers from Arch repos? Is there any specific reason that you want to install the official ATI drivers?
There's no such thing as a stupid question, but there sure are a lot of inquisitive idiots !

catalyst 10.10
I am really new to this. What's the package called in the arch repos? Do I get it from a simple pacman call? And if that's the case how do I rid my system of the catalyst drivers?

If you want Catalyst then you should install it from AUR package catalyst 10.12. If you want open source driver then xf86-video-ati from the repo.
Also take a look at wiki pages - Ati and ATI Catalyst.
