The machine came with Ubuntu Jaunty Jackalope 9.04, and the processor is a Pentium Core2 Solo. By horizontal scrolling if you mean click and drag then it certainly works. My kernel version is indeed 2.6.35 and the Arch system on it is up to date. The machine dual boots Arch and Ubuntu Maverick. I will share the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file as soon as I am in Arch.

Be formless, shapeless... like water. Now you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup; you put water into a bottle it becomes the bottle; if you put it in a teapot it becomes the teapot... Now water can flow, or it can crash... Be water my friend

Re: Can't load Synaptics drivers in Dell Vostro V13

Here is the output of uname -a:

The /var/log/Xorg.0.log looks like (sorry for the mega inline code - I do not see how to attach files here?):

Re: Can't load Synaptics drivers in Dell Vostro V13

The machine came with Ubuntu Jaunty Jackalope 9.04, and the processor is a Pentium Core2 Solo. By horizontal scrolling if you mean click and drag then it certainly works. My kernel version is indeed 2.6.35 and the Arch system on it is up to date. The machine dual boots Arch and Ubuntu Maverick. I will share the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file as soon as I am in Arch.

Thank you once more for information you provide. By horizontal scrolling i mean acting touchpad like mouse wheel. Then you click touchpad in the right top corner and move your finger to the right bottom corner system acts alike mouse wheel scrolling. Did you mean this case when mention click and drag?

I researched you X log and it seems X server  did not found synaptic touchpad device, but it found standard mouse with 3 keys:
[    21.968] (II) config/udev: Adding input device PS/2 Generic Mouse (/dev/input/event11)
[    21.968] (**) PS/2 Generic Mouse: Applying InputClass "evdev pointer catchall"
[    21.968] (**) PS/2 Generic Mouse: always reports core events
[    21.968] (**) PS/2 Generic Mouse: Device: "/dev/input/event11"
[    21.968] (--) PS/2 Generic Mouse: Found 3 mouse buttons
[    21.968] (--) PS/2 Generic Mouse: Found relative axes
[    21.968] (--) PS/2 Generic Mouse: Found x and y relative axes
[    21.968] (II) PS/2 Generic Mouse: Configuring as mouse
[    21.968] (**) PS/2 Generic Mouse: YAxisMapping: buttons 4 and 5
[    21.968] (**) PS/2 Generic Mouse: EmulateWheelButton: 4, EmulateWheelInertia: 10, EmulateWheelTimeout: 200
[    21.968] (II) XINPUT: Adding extended input device "PS/2 Generic Mouse" (type: MOUSE)
[    21.968] (**) PS/2 Generic Mouse: (accel) keeping acceleration scheme 1
[    21.968] (**) PS/2 Generic Mouse: (accel) acceleration profile 0
[    21.968] (**) PS/2 Generic Mouse: (accel) acceleration factor: 2.000
[    21.968] (**) PS/2 Generic Mouse: (accel) acceleration threshold: 4
[    21.968] (II) PS/2 Generic Mouse: initialized for relative axes.
[    21.969] (II) config/udev: Adding input device PS/2 Generic Mouse (/dev/input/mouse1)

So I can conclude your system didn't recognize the touchpad, and "thinks" there is standart ps/2 mouse.
You are saying laptop came with Ubuntu? Is there the same Xorg log? Did it recognize synaptic driver?

Re: Can't load Synaptics drivers in Dell Vostro V13

Yes I believe it does not seem to recognize the synaptics driver - but then I think the xorg-input-mouse driver is able to handle the touchpad as a mouse. I cannot tap the top right and drag, but if I hold the left touchpad button with my thumb that enables me to drag using my finger, so this suffices for me for everything. I will upload the Ubuntu Xorg log once I am in Ubuntu too - by the way did you try installing the standard xorg mouse driver? Does it seem to work in place of the synaptics driver?

Superficially it looks like Ubuntu also thinks the touchpad is a generic mouse.

Re: Can't load Synaptics drivers in Dell Vostro V13

OK I see. It obviously now that dell did not provide any support of the touchpad. I read the kernel code of the psmouse module it seems the touchpad did not came through initialization. Is there any forum to discuss the development of the driver for dell touchpad?

drag using a left key you were saying is not very comfortable, it has a leakage of text select functionality (holding left button and selecting the text). I did the emulation of 3 button, it provide srolling in the web browser after pressing both left and right button. Not exciting a much but better then nothing.

Re: Can't load Synaptics drivers in Dell Vostro V13

Hehe... I guess I have not known any other way - I always select text while holding the left key! This Xorg log from Ubuntu however is from a fresh installation of Maverick 10.10; the laptop had come with Jaunty Jackalope 9.08 which was formatted with Lucid and then upgraded to Maverick; so if Dell did provide any drivers, I am no longer aware of them.

Dell does have a development forum where a Dell team supports integration of Ubuntu and other distros onto Dell machines - it is on

http://linux.dell.com/

Take a look at the following page for instance:

http://en.community.dell.com/support-fo … -9-04.aspx

This has a link to the original iso they provide, which might have the synaptics drivers you are looking for. For myself, since I don't care about other functionalities, I am fine with the touchpad being configured as a mouse. It is quite weird however that the open source synaptics drivers did not do the trick.

Re: Can't load Synaptics drivers in Dell Vostro V13

thanks for the links i'll follow them.

You were saying:
I hold the left touchpad button with my thumb that enables me to drag using my finger.

And it makes no possibility to select the text while pressing the left key and moving the mouse pointer, cause systems "thinks" you want to scroll. Is it?

Re: Can't load Synaptics drivers in Dell Vostro V13

My Inspiron has similar problem. The touchpad is recognized as PS/2 Generic Mouse.

Weirdly, the loaded module for the touchpad is psmous. Reloading the module makes no difference.

I might try applying the patch mentioned above and compiling a kernel.
