Forum categories reordered?
A day or two ago I noticed the forums categories were in a different order; however, I couldn't find any announcement about it.
I am curious what motived these changes. In particular why the Announcements are no longer at the very top.

We wanted to make the Newbie Corner more visible; a lot of posts really belong there. As for the rest of the reorganisation, some categories were vague and confusing (e.g. Workstation user was merged with another forum).

Is there a way to hide forums you dont want to see?
For example the whole 'Technical Issues and Assistance' section just gets in the way now.
I searched in my profile but couldnt find anything. Thanks.

You could possibly write a greasemonkey script for that. We would not be adding such a feature unless upstream implements it.
Allan-Volunteer on the (topic being discussed) mailn lists. You never get the people who matters attention on the forums.

Either I am hallucinating or there actually was a sticky about this in one of the subforums, IIRC written by Cerebral.

I did notice that, while the forum names were changed, the quick menu at the bottom (which conatins a list of the forum names) did not change. When you select one that was removed/changed, it gives you an error message that it wasn't found.
It's minor, I know, but it's handy when you are done reading a topic, but now, it shows the "Desktop Environments" rather than the new name. It gives the forums a feeling as though they aren't quite finished.

If people were posting in announcements and shouldn't have been, then just make the descriptions a lot better and more obvious you are doing it wrong, or make sure the first sticky is a "READ BEFORE POSTING" type thing. Or just move Newbie Corner to the top section right under the Announcements forum; it would be hard to miss there.

The problem is that people just don't read, no matter how big or bold you make the stickies.
There was also little vital information in the Announcements section in the last months (mostly Schwag, Archboot and forum/wiki updates that belong better in the Forum & Wiki subforum). Also the really important stuff is already mentioned on the frontpage.
