I keep having occasional hard drive thrashing that brings my system to a crawl. I can't get any kind of monitoring going once it happens (since the system won't do anything during that time). It happens once to twice a day (I use it 8 hours/day), and lasts for about 10 minutes. The hard drive is a 1.8" SSD-based drive, I don't know what type.
devpts /dev/pts devpts defaults 0 0
shm /dev/shm tmpfs nodev,nosuid 0 0
/dev/sda1 /boot ext2 defaults 0 1
/dev/sda2 swap swap defaults 0 0
/dev/sda3 /home ext4 defaults 0 1
/dev/sda4 / ext4 noatime 0 1
Just after the hard drive thrashing, this is all the info I have dug up:

Nothing additional is dumped in dmesg or /var/log/messages.log after this occurs.
I have also had this happen when the same machine was running Ubuntu 9.10, 10.04 or 10.10. Any ideas?

Since you mention that it also happens in multiple versions of Ubuntu, I am guessing a driver problem in Linux. Do you have Windows? If so, does the thrashing occur in Windows as well?
Yes = Hardware problem
No = Maybe you are using the wrong driver for you SSD since you don't know what model type it is.
There's no such thing as a stupid question, but there sure are a lot of inquisitive idiots !

Good call. I don't believe Windows had the issue when I had it installed. Is there an easy way to tell what model SSD I have without having to take this thing apart?

sudo hdparm -I /dev/sdX
will give you some information like model number as long as the vendor is not too off-beat. You can then use the model number to find out your vendor and consequently the correct driver.

Doh! How did I forget about hdparm? I guess it has been a while since I've needed it.
It returns the following:
# hdparm -I /dev/sda
/dev/sda:
ATA device, with non-removable media
Model Number: TOSHIBA MK1214GAH
I guess it isn't an SSD. Then I guess a driver would probably not be an issue? Also, if it was a driver issue, why does my swap start filling up when my RAM isn't being fully used? I have swappiness set to 0.

Try to triage the problem. Does it happen mostly after starting/killing a certain app or apps?

There isn't any real pattern to it that I can tell. I am not doing anything remotely intensive when it happens. Not opening or closing apps, etc. I typically have several tabs in Chrome open, but no flash-based video or anything.

Beats me. But in your OP, you didn't mention /var/log/Xorg.0.log. After it happens the next time, try to check that log as well.

Well that was a wild goose chase as it doesn't show anything other than a bunch of mode lines
Did you try out what skunktrader suggested?
There's no such thing as a stupid question, but there sure are a lot of inquisitive idiots !

Maybe it's something that cron runs twice a day?
Offline
Run dstat with "dstat -cdmnspg --top-bio --top-io --top-cpu" or somesuch and it might find the culprit.

I was thinking that's a possibility as well.

Do you use KDE? Could be a desktop search crawler from KDE that starts scanning your system.
Can you login from another system through SSH and start top?

My guess is that your system is flushing from swap. The combination of having only 1GB of ram (a bit low these days for a graphical UI - maybe try xfce/fluxbox/lxde...) and having your swappiness set to zero means that when your system detects that some of your physical ram has been freed up (like when you close a web tab or quit a program) then it tries to move swap memory back to physical.
Normally, on a modern desktop(like a quad core), this process runs nearly unnoticeable in the background...you might hear your drive making some noise and notice about 50% cpu utilization... no biggy. BUT!, on your system with only a core solo and the Toshiba 1.8" HDD being famously slow (perhaps the slowest HDD on the market)...it drags your system to a crawl...
Now I might be way off base here... but I would recommend changing your swappinnes back to 60 and try a lighter desktop environment.
Try that and report back!

It might be caused by mlocate _and_ some indexing feature of the DE you are using (if the DE you use has some kind of indexing feature).
I have removed mlocate (it is installed by default) because it used to cause problems for me too, it started always at the least convenient time and would make my computer grind to a halt. Besides, I never used locate that much so I don't miss having it.

The trick is to have dstat running while the hdd is trashing and look at it when you can use your PC. You could append "| tee file_name" to it, so its output would also get saved to a file.
