Quite generic but..
In case of any error, try using a new user account or (re)moving KDE's configuration which can be found at ~/.kde4 /tmp/kde- /var/tmp/kdecache-. Akonadi saves its data at ~/.config/akonadi and ~/.local/share/akonadi.
wiping all the things listed here "fixed" weird KDE issues each single upgrade for me. They've a real issue managing configuration upgrades in KDE, it's annoying to have to reset.
finding which exact setting is loaded wrongly / has changed by hand is a huge pain compared to reset also.. so .. just resetting seems helpful.
of course it's still possible that it doesnt fix it - but it most often just does the trick.

@kang: thanks, but as I mentioned before, I already tried that, but it doesn't help. The current system settings *are* the default settings.
@xephinx:
Ok, here we go: (I'll translate this from German as well as I can with my school english )
Compositing type: OpenGL
Disable funcionality checks: Off
General Options:
Windows preview characteristics: only for visible windows
Scale method: accurate
Disable desktop effects for applications in full screen mode: On
OpenGL Options:
OpenGL-mode: texture from pixmap
Activate direct rendering: On
Use VSync: On
That's it.

Here is what I have:
Compositing type: „OpenGL“ -> Don't use XRender it's a Software Render.
Keep window thumbnails: I have „Always (Breaks minimization)“ in your case test it with „Never“.
Scale method: Set it to „Crisp“!!! -> other options might be very slow!
OpenGL mode: „Texture From Pixmap“
Enable direct rendering [true]
Use VSync [true] -> test it with [false] if it is smoother for you.

I think this is the problem... set it to „CRISP“.
Check also the Fine-Tuning option under System Settings -> Application Appearance ( in german this would be „Fensterdarstellung“ oder etwas in der Art).

Thanks, that seems logical to me, but unfortunately it didn't help. What is kind of special is that the 3D cube works well but the 3D effect for windows switching alẃays makes problems. I really don't know what to do any more.

I have kept my ~/.kde4 since KDE 4.0 and not experienced any problems.
But that is not what I wanted to say.
All working fine here apart from the sphere for changing desktops. I'm just not very keen on this cube...

EDIT: I changed the 3D effect for windows switching to windows galery. Before I chose windows stack (Fensterstapel). Now everything works fine! Yeah. There must be a bug in the windows stack effect then, I suppose? Well, then there's only one thing, that isn't working yet: gtk-oxygen. It would be nice if chromium and filezilla used it. Anyone an idea?

Try oxygen-gtk.

I haven't updated my laptop yet, but on I get a seg fault with plasma-desktop. I can still launch applications using alt+f2, even watch videos in smplayer, but the plasma workspace is basically gone. Here is the output of /var/log/everything.log:
Jan 29 15:49:23 localhost kernel: plasma-desktop[5121]: segfault at 0 ip 00007f5a1b280082 sp 00007fff0c9f3950 error 6 in libtaskmanager.so.4.6.0[7f5a1b24f000+47000]
I have 2 more plasmoids to uninstall for testing. I'm not removing my .kde4 folder unless I absolutely have to.....I mean that sort of goes against the 'Arch way' doesn't it? Instead of pinpointing your problem you wipe out an entire directory of settings...
Using a test account worked fine though. Glad to see that they changed the dfault desktop background finally!
I did this:
#mv /var/tmp/kdecache-$USER
to a backup directory and tried running startx again, and I received a seg fault and a black desktop. Upon logging out with ctrl+alt+del I saw my working desktop momentarily...

Hi,
I have the same issue, libtaskmanager.so.4.6.0/plasma-desktop seg fault.
I have uninstall smooth-tasks from AUR, and all works again.
I will try to install kdeplasma-addons-applets-smooth-tasks-kde-sc-46-hg, perhabs it works...

Every valid point's been made already. All I can add is that I've been using 4.6 since RC1 without any of the problems you describe. Every single time some major aspect of some DE gets pushed through, someone has some unlikely problems and decides to devote their energy to complaining rather than seeking a solution, and blaming the software that doesn't seem to be causing other people such serious problems. This makes those problems subjective, and the complaints don't help for shit. Go make a blog post and leave the productive folk to sort things out in peace.

Just finished installing on my toshiba notebook without a hint of a problem.
What are all these people talking about?
edit: by installing I mean updating!

I was running smooth-tasks wip_2010_11_06-1...I'm going to try without that plasmoid and see if it works. Thankfully I backed up my .kde4 directory. Thanks for the info, I completely forgot about smooth-tasks.

remove all addons when you have the new kde update and decide to review about it.

Anyone experience frequent crashs/seg faults of kwin? Could it be relating to running Arch inside VirtualBox? Its a clean minimal install btw.

kwin crashes for me every time I exit a fullscreen game. I am very frustrated with KDE right now but I still love KDE the most out of any other DE.

Some plasmoids that cause instability and crashing for me were:
smooth-tasks, seg-fault in plasma-desktop
gmail plasmoid, can't retain password info on account after logging out of KDE
eventlist, caused plasma desktop to freeze for ~10s.
Hopefully we'll get updates of these plasmoids soon.

I'm actually surprised by the number of posts I've seen regarding some show stopping bugs with KDE 4.6.0. 4.5.0 had its fair share, but most were correctable by editing kwinrc

Better not use the effect of 'flip switching'. It frozen my desktop for about 1 minute each time, even when I logined as a newly-created user.

@adaptee: I found that bug report, too. And that's exactly what I said, so hopefully this is going to be fixed in next bugfix release …

Well I recently installed KDE after 3 years using Gnome, a week later came the KDE 4.6 updates guess what not one problem at all even running the oxygen transparent theme, I use effects with no problems plasmoids are known to give problems after any major update so I use conky. There is a problem with the power manager writing large amounts of data to disc when in power saving but I use a desk top so my solution is to disable power saving. I did not remove hal and will not in the near future as it gives far greater control over the 4 hardrives I use.
I'm dyslexic Please do not complain about puntuation or spelling and remember most dyslexic people have above average iq.

I currently installed XFCE alongside KDE 4.6. Hopefully when KDE 4.6.1 comes out, it will fix all the bugs. Thankfully this release isn't as rocky as 4.5, but it seems like it's the small things that annoy me most. Here are the problems I'm having (even with a new .kde4 folder):
1.) Most of the time when I log out, I get a crash message 2 out of 3 times.
2.) The panel stops responding randomly, for five or six seconds at a time.
3.) Every full screen game I play crashes kwin once you exit the game.
4.) Also when I exit a full screen game, the kmenu will never appear again unless I reboot.
I hope there are work arounds for those problems. They aren't ground shaking bugs, but the little things annoy me most.

I hope you write bug reports, because the developers don't look at this forum.
Best regards!

WTF? If I wanted to periodically wipe my desktop, I'd use MS Windows. But I guess that like Windows users we got to lazy to look for better alternatives, so we just got what we deserve for sticking with KDE.
You're comparing Windows (an operating system) to KDE (a desktop environment). The unfortunate truth is that with EVERY major KDE release, you MUST remove your .kde4 folder to reset your configuration. Of course, there are some who have been lucky and haven't had to do that. But the general rule is, you MUST delete your configuration or something won't work. This is a KDE problem, not Linux. If that bothers you, use GNOME.
Hopefully the KDE developers fix this problem soon, but not for a few more releases from now at least. The entire KDE4 series has never played well with having a previous configuration.
I doubt I've had to remove my whole .kde4 in order to install a new version. Never had any trouble....therefore it's not a *MUST* rather than a suggestion
