This is a KDE problem, not Linux. If that bothers you, use GNOME.

I do. I have like three or four apps that are KDE dependent and now I have flickering screen.
And yes, deleting config folders is so win-like. Not to mention that it doesn't help.

While it sucks that you're having problems. Deleting your configuration (or moving it if you want a backup) is pretty much a standard troubleshooting approach on any platform. It's as Windows as it is Mac OS and Linux.

Some plasmoids that cause instability and crashing for me were:
smooth-tasks, seg-fault in plasma-desktop
gmail plasmoid, can't retain password info on account after logging out of KDE
eventlist, caused plasma desktop to freeze for ~10s.

Hopefully we'll get updates of these plasmoids soon.

just reinstall smooth-tasks, worked for me.

And finally, if you're unwilling to remove .kde because 'you shouldn't have to', then I'd suggest moving away from KDE. Gnome may be an option, or the Trinity packages which someone is currently working on.

Thanks for the Trinity tip. Just in case someone is interested: http://trinity.pearsoncomputing.net/

Every valid point's been made already.  All I can add is that I've been using 4.6 since RC1 without any of the problems you describe.  Every single time some major aspect of some DE gets pushed through, someone has some unlikely problems and decides to devote their energy to complaining rather than seeking a solution, and blaming the software that doesn't seem to be causing other people such serious problems.  This makes those problems subjective, and the complaints don't help for shit.  Go make a blog post and leave the productive folk to sort things out in peace.

Ouch! That hurt. I'm aware that whining achieves nothing, but you have to concede an old fart a little relief. And never been into blogging, I'd rather troll our beloved forums wink

Mine was terribly unstable at first, but after taking all the suggested action it is running better than ever.

Seriously, guys, some people here seem to be using the wrong distribution. Surely, you are unhappy if you run into bugs with newly released software. But if you run Arch, you should be both able and willing to troubleshoot your system. Moving configuration files, downgrading, etc. has always been part of what needs to be done on Arch, at least, if you use highly complex software such as a DE. If you want guaranteed stable stuff out-of-the-box, use a different distribution.

Re: KDE 4.6 increadibly unstable

I tried the "look and search" option only for my desktop and suffered frequent lockups. Back on the old "desktop" things are stable, however.

The network manager plasmoid should be working : right click on your system tray, in the settings check the Network Management box.

Re: KDE 4.6 increadibly unstable

I had many problems too until I removed smooth-tasks. I did not have to remove .kde4.
I see some other bugs out there but accept it (networkmanager, some probems with file transfer, someone is experiencing problems with power button). I know for experience .0 releases are never that stable for everyone, if you wanted a stable desktop you should have waited for 4.6.1 or 4.6.2.
I also had many problems with 4.5 since I use Intel video hardware, but that wasn't KDE fault. I played a bit with 3D settings (bilinear, trilinear, tried to use xrender and so on) and installed drivers from testing, and it suddenly worked flawlessly.

As other said, this is Arch. It's rolling. If you wanted something completely rock-solid just use a non-rolling distro or, better, a Debian stable. But I believe you will miss The Arch Way in the end.

I recommend using wicd-nogtk and wicd-client-kde together from AUR. It gives the best network management experience for KDE. I hope the plasmoid gets better but I doubt it will anytime soon. Make sure you check the wicd wiki to set up the necessary daemon for it to work properly.
