I use archlinux 0.7. Gimp and opera goes good on fluxbox, on my celeron 563, 192mb ram. But when I starts xmms, opera goes slowly, the gimp does the same. What's the problem?

Is your Audio and Video both on-board or a dedicated card? I would attribute the speed drop to your system specs, depending on the answer to the first question. Nothing against the machine, but it is becoming dated.

might as well be a problem with overclocking the cpu from 500 to 563mhz. go with the defaults, then step by step upwards to where you want to be and see what happens. these 63mhz do more harm than good anyway from my experience.
way back in the past i have had a pci128 too and it caused a lot of problems on my overclocked system. since when the FSB is being clocked higher the PCI bus will automaticly align itself as well. so the card may get more than the standard 33mhz or something. check the manual of your board.

Yeah, overclocking is only for pros.
I once overclocked my pIII by increasing the FSB from 100 to 115 (x4.5).
After 3 months I had a compotent on my mainboard which looked like it had been on a barbecue for 2 hours. And my mainboard did not work anymore.
If you want to gain speed in linux, I suggest you buy a dual- or quad- processor mainboard. Compiling on these machines is a breeze. And linux support for these machines is good.

I watched "top". xmms or bmp eats 20-50% cpu. I play mp3 and ogg.
My cpu ir oveclocked one year and i haven't any problems with it in other distros. Maybe kernel compiling will help with sound?

Try with something else (like....muine, rhythmbox, or mpd), and if they use as much resources, try to compile a kernel of your own.

sounds much like you use a slow software soundcard like most cheap ac97 compatibles. try another card or see if your chipset is supported in the kernel or if configured correctly. it might be that it only works with some kind of generic driver. that almost always slows things down.
oh btw, do you use an PCI graphics card? if so, try a lower resolution/bpp. it might be that your PCI bus is a little stressed. ;p

After kernel 2.6.11 compiling the problem exists. At first xmms use 5-10% cpu, but later it jumps over 20, or even 40% of cpu. It is similar and with alsa and with oss output.

Over knoppix 3.2 2.4.* kernel live cd, xmms in my computer use less than 1% cpu :!: . So, may it is 2.6 kernel problem? Should I use 2.4 kernel?

On kernel 2.4.30 problem dissapeared. xmms uses ~1% cpu. But after every reboot I have to load sound manually with:
modprobe snd-ens1371
modprobe snd-pcm-oss
alsactl restore
How to automate this step?

Add those modules to MODULES section of rc.conf or to /etc/modules.conf. And start /etc/rc.d/alsa (from alsa-utils package) on boot (DAEMONS section of rc.conf) to restore volume settings.
