Power off occasinally freezes

I'm not sure if this is the right place to put it, but I think it is a kernel problem.

Sometimes, when I turn off my laptop, it freezes during power-off.  I see the usual messages about stopping daemons and other processes, and then when it displays the [Power Off] message (I think that is what it says), it just hangs until I force a power down (by holding down the power button).  This is terribly annoying, and I would really like to fix it.  I am willing to recompile the kernel, but all my previous attempts have been unbootable (probably because I accedently removed a module I needed).  My uname command gives:
Linux [hostname] 2.6.37-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT [DATE] x86_64 Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T5800 @ 2.00GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

Re: Power off occasinally freezes

I have also been experiencing strange shutdown issues since 2.6.37. If I leave it long enough it gives me a message something like this:

-----

note: migration/1[8] exited with preempt_count 2

WARNING: at kernel/watchdog.c:227 watchdog_overflow_callback+0x...

Hardware name: Aspire 1420p

Watchdog detected hard LOCKUP on cpu 0

Modules: ...<all modules listed here>"

-----

I would appreciate any input on this issue. Thanks.

I have 2.6.37 installed on 5 machines -- shutdown works fine on 4 of them but always hangs on a dell inspiron 1525

Same problem with my ThinkPad R61 - CPU icon disappears and it hangs.

I used to have the same problem on my Atom 330 machine. Turning off hyper-threading in BIOS did the trick for me. Not a long-term solution, but at least my server reboots properly now smile

Re: Power off occasinally freezes

Hmm, I haven't observed it yet on an Core2 duo P7350. Here is some additional info, suggesting that it's a problem with putting CPU offline: http://permalink.gmane.org/gmane.linux.kernel/1094035. I wonder what happens if one disables the CONFIG_LOCKUP_DETECTOR parameter.

Re: Power off occasinally freezes

Hi there, I got exactly the same problem with my laptop. running with root "shutdown -h now" freezes during the Power Off output 99% of the time. Checked the loggs and dmesg but cannot find anything.
Running with Arch Linux 2.6.37-ARCH   (64bit)
x86_64 Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T7100 @ 1.80GHz (HP Compaq 6501b)
Running with slim and openbox

Edit
Did wait and got a traceback log.
First pic is a bit blurry could not get so much text = http://image.bayimg.com/hadbbaadn.jpg
Second pic whole traceback log = http://image.bayimg.com/hadbcaadn.jpg

My friend running same computer with Arch and Openbox have exactly same issues.

Re: Power off occasinally freezes

I am the "friend", and I'm getting the very same error (with the same hardware).
Tried without any modules, and without any daemons.

- I can now confirm that the problem disappears when using "nomodeset", although this kills Intel drivers.
