[kernel 2.6.37] after upgrading my laptop does not power down

After upgrading to 2.6.37 when i shut down my lenovo R61 laptop the laptop stays open after the last message that says that the system will power off. It's the first time after 1.5 year that i run archlinux on it so it definately has to do with the kernel.

Any idea?

Re: [kernel 2.6.37] after upgrading my laptop does not power down

This also happens here and started with 2.6.36. But it only happended at average at every second power down and I don't shut down my computer that often, so I didn't start to investigate. Now with 2.6.37 the problem didn't disappear. But I have no idea what to do about it. Maybe a bug report upstream is the right move.

Same problem on Toshiba Satellite A200 (1N1), starting from 2.6.37rc7.

After some google'ing, found that Dell E6400 also has the same problem, and there is a kernel bug for it:

Same here on HP420.

I have an watchdog hard lockup on shutdown using 2.6.37 so I've  downgraded to 2.6.36.

Re: [kernel 2.6.37] after upgrading my laptop does not power down

ah, jeez. makes me not want to build .37 (which i was literally in the process of doing). i still might build (on Acer Aspire 7552G-6061) to test if my config somehow gets around this since there's so little enabled. will report back later..

EDIT: sorry for the delay, i was away for a while. anyway, tested for a few days and it seems to be working fine here.

Re: [kernel 2.6.37] after upgrading my laptop does not power down

I have an Acer Aspire 7720 with Kernel 2.6.37 working just fine. I however have not made the upgrade to KDE 4.6 on that unit.
I wonder if the problem is the the combination of KDE and kernel2.6.37?

I have a workstation with KDE 4.6 and kernel 2.6.37 and sometimes when I use the power button  to turn it off it hangs for awhile (up to 10 min)  before it shuts down.
Having said that if I use the combination of Kickoff -> Leave -> Shutdown it goes as expected.

R.

Re: [kernel 2.6.37] after upgrading my laptop does not power down

@ralvez -- So you're not getting the shutdown problem on you laptop running KDE 4.5x and 2.6.37? I've been getting the shutdown problem running 2.6.37 with XFCE 4.8 on my laptop. However, I'm getting no problems running KDE 4.6 and 2.6.37 on my desktop.

Re: [kernel 2.6.37] after upgrading my laptop does not power down

Same for me on an HP 6910p. I had three frozen shutdowns in a row last week at work, though on Friday it was shutting down again. I haven't pulled the latest kernel release that I just saw come out, so I'll post back this coming week when I'm back on my work machine. I can try to keep a log of how often it happens, but without tracking modules and processes... I'm not sure what that information will help with?

Same issue here. Running arch x86_64 kernel 2.6.37 on a HP compaq 6530b, with xmonad 0.9.2-1. Some output appears after ~25 sec waiting:

Re: [kernel 2.6.37] after upgrading my laptop does not power down

At the spanish forum they gave me a "solution" I quote it because I still testing if everything returned back to normal, maybe this could help you guys.

Erase the .kde4 directory found at /home, it's hidden so don't forget to press ALT+.

This will erase your KDE preferences.

At the moment everything is just perfect with me, but it's a preliminary result...

Take care!

Re: [kernel 2.6.37] after upgrading my laptop does not power down

This is not a KDE only issue. as seen on other parts of this forum.

Running with Arch Linux 2.6.37-ARCH   (64bit)
x86_64 Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T7100 @ 1.80GHz (HP Compaq 6501b)
Running with Slim and Openbox

lshw = http://codepad.org/zBnSHyaT
Output when freezing = http://image.bayimg.com/hadbcaadn.jpg

using "nomodeset" seems to solve this issue, however not a solution because it kills my intel drivers.

Re: [kernel 2.6.37] after upgrading my laptop does not power down

Yes, I also use openbox and have no .kde4 directory in ~.

@Commander: my frozen screen looks extremely similar to the one you posted. I'd have to check all the tracebacks, but I can for sure confirm the "Watchdog confirmed hard LOCKUP on cpu 0' line.

Re: [kernel 2.6.37] after upgrading my laptop does not power down

Also been having the problems in the past few weeks.  Even now with latest pull of zen kernel i literally just compiled a half hour ago.  2.6.37.1-zen, homebuilt x86_64 box, nvidia gfx, KDE 4.6 without HAL...  The kernel bug noted earlier in this thread has been marked closed, due to a commit "x86: Readd missing irq_to_desc() in fixup_irq()"... but this commit is also in the zen that I just built (which still hangs on shutdown).

Re: [kernel 2.6.37] after upgrading my laptop does not power down

it looks like the last kernel update  2.6.37.1-1 has fixed this issue.

http://www.archlinux.org/packages/core/x86_64/kernel26/
Build Date:     Feb. 18, 2011, 5:35 p.m. UTC
Last Updated:     2011-02-20

I've just updated my laptop, and after reboot to the new kernel the shutdown process passed well and nicely turned off as wanted.
