KDM broken

Hello I've been using arch for about a month now and everything was working fine until i updated yesterday.

First off I've tried google all day and night for a solution and still no luck, i also tried uninstalling KDE and Xorg completely and then reinstalling completely and still no luck.  Hopefully one of you smart guys out there can point me in the right direction.

I followed the tutorials in the beginners guide: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Beginners'_Guide#Install_X

first off, after completing the beginners guide to get Xorg installed i had no ~/.xinitrc and no /etc/X11/xorg.conf
here is the code from my /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Re: KDM broken

What is exactly going wrong ? X doesn't start ? Did you try to start X manually ?
What kind of graphics card do you have ?

Re: KDM broken

xorg.conf is no longer needed (although you can create one if you need some special configuration). Now all settings are usually done with files under /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d

~/.xinitrc is not created automatically. you need to either create it from scratch or copy a template from /etc/skel (i think).

Have you installed your video drivers?

Re: KDM broken

I have the video drivers installed, they are (extra/xf86-video-intel)
My video card is: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GME Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)

Let me describe the problem a little more, I was running arch just fine with Xorg and KDE working perfectly, I did a full upgrade(like i normally do every few days) and then my desktop environment(KDE) would no longer load. On startup after all the daemons run i see a watch in the middle of the screen for about a second then it goes away and the terminal login is there.  I can 'sudo startx' and that starts just fine, i just can't get kdm or kde started.

I created a ~/.xinitrc and still no luck

Re: KDM broken

can you post your ~/.xinitrc ?

Also have you seen a number of threads about kdm that have been recently started? It seems there is an issue with consolekit. Search for those two terms and you might find a solution or two.

Re: KDM broken

it seems you are not using consolekit.

Have you tried

 exec ck-launch-session startkde

or

exec ck-launch-session dbus-launch startkde

Re: KDM broken

after trying

exec ck-launch-session startkde

and

exec ck-launch-session dbus-launch startkde

i received a quick message for both that says

$DISPLAY is not set or cannot connect to the X server.

sudo startx

then

exec ck-launch-session startkde

but its still not quite working properly, its saying i have low disk space, and every windows that popus up has the Xorg border around it.

Re: KDM broken

Similar issues here:

Attempting to start kdm will yield the following messages in /var/log/errors.log

Feb 3 19:01:47 localhost kdm: :0[3346]: Received unknown or unexpected command -2 from greeter
Feb 3 19:01:47 localhost kdm: :0[3346]: Abnormal termination of greeter for display :0, code 1, signal 0

Attempts made to resolve issue:
- install all of kde-meta (initially only had kde-meta-kdebase)
- reinstall several packages including intel drivers, Xorg, mesa, kde-meta
- reinstall every package on the system
- Install hal, uninstal hal
- ensure dbus is running, try when dbus is stopped
- investigate /usr/share/config/kdm/kdmrc settings, make minor modifications
- create a 10-monitor.conf file in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/, remove the file after no beneficial results
- ps -wef | grep udev (yields 3 processes)
- delete all .hidden directories I did not explicitly create/configure
- restart kde via /etc/rc.d/kdm restart, start kde via rc.conf, start kde via inittab

How to successfully start kde:
- add startkde to .xinitrc and startx

Hardware info:
Thinkpad Edge 14

Packages:
kde-meta-* 4.6-1.2
xf86-video-intel 2.14.0-1
xorg-server 1.9.3.901-1

Re: KDM broken

The only work-around I found was to install GDM, after i installed GDM, I could get into KDE just fine, only downside is that i have to use GDM now

Re: KDM broken

I've narrowed down the problem. Commenting out the following line in /usr/share/config/kdm/kdmrc will result in kdm starting successfully:

GreeterUID=kdm

This defaults the GreeterUID to "" which results in root. This indicates a permission/ownership problem. I would not recommend running kdm as root. I will investigate further to determine the source of the problem.

Re: KDM broken

Using strace I found that 3 attempts are made to connect to 127.0.0.1:6000. Each attemt returns ECONNREFUSED. After the 3rd attempt "kdmgreet: cannot connect to X se"... is reported.

Commenting out the following line in kdmrc:

ServerArgsLocal=-nolisten tcp

and doing another strace results in a successful connection but an immediate EACCESS on "var/run/xauth/A:..." followed by a read and write of "No protocol specified\n\0\0". After 3 failed attempts "kdmgreet: cannot connect to X se"... is reported.

Is your /etc/hosts configured correctly ?
127.0.0.1 is localhost so it's very strange that it can't connect.

Re: KDM broken

Changing the GreeterUID fixes the issue. This makes sense because of EACCESS error on /var/run/xauth/auth_generated_filename_here.  I don't think it's a network configuration issue. Additionally, it is connecting using the localhost ip. It is not trying to do any sort of name resolution, so it shouldn't be referring to the /etc/hosts file for any reason. However, my /etc/hosts file looks as follows:

 127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost myhost think

Re: KDM broken

It appears that we were getting the same error message for very different reasons. I'm glad you resolved the issue. I will start a new thread.
