Re: Kernel panic, Hardware Error

Please use code tags as opposed to quote tags since the code tags provide scrollers etc.

Very Important: mario.torme - please read the forum etiquette in its ENTIRETY and follow it to the letter. Next infraction will earn you a ban since I have told you before about the rules as well.

We understand that not everyone uses English as their first language. If you have any questions regarding understanding the forum rules, please email me and I'll try my best to answer them.

You can update the bios in many ways. Easiest would be if you have Windows installed on it. Do you?

In that case have a look at this wiki page  which might help you flash your BIOS through linux.

Is it a safe method? Because...

Warning: Flashing motherboard BIOS is a dangerous activity that can render your motherboard inoperable! While the author of this article has successfully run this procedure many times, your mileage may vary. Be careful!

Re: Kernel panic, Hardware Error

I always upgraded my BIOS to latest versions and had no problems. But you have to be careful, read the manufacturers instuctions and have a fully charged battery (if you use a laptop).
I don't think that using linux for this is a good idea, because unfortunately manufacturers support only windows or dos. and don't rely on wikis and other third party docs. go to  manufaturer's site, search your model, download the BIOS update utilities provided. for example, to update my mb I need to dl a DOS environment disk and the BIOS, boot from that disk and run the updater (all this steps are detailed in a readme file).
many recent MBs have dual bios, so in case something goes wrong you simply revert to the old version, making this operation worry free.

If you do it right, everything is safe. I did it myself a few times before writing that article. YMMV.

Re: Kernel panic, Hardware Error

one important thing to note, if you use biosdisk, is that you will need a BIOS executable not a Windows executable.

Re: Kernel panic, Hardware Error

Ok, I am following the instructions of HP here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/docu … =c00007682

The problem is that I can not find the page of the BIOS on my PC, which is this:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/prod … g=en&cc=us

Then it says that is still Windows, but at least understand if there is a BIOS update.

Fair enough, I admit I didn't read all posts as the most common causes seem to be hardware related (cpu overheating caused by overclocking or from a heatsink that needs to be cleaned) or memory related problems.

As for having a windows only executable, that might not be a problem. Have a look at this, it may help you http://www.ubcd4win.com/downloads.htm

Re: Kernel panic, Hardware Error

Ok, sorry if I write just now but I had some university exams (also an English exam smile) and I decided to postpone this procedure until now.

So, I have to decide how to update BIOS. http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/soft … 9&sw_lang=
With Bios of HP i must have Windows Vista, so what should I do?!

Re: Kernel panic, Hardware Error

ok I need to understand if I'm wrong or not. With this guide: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fl … Unetbootin
I have created a bootable disk.

You should format a pendrive with FAT16 and flag it as "boot" (you may do this through GUI with gparted or partitionmanager). Then, after mounting the flash drive, select under distribution FreeDOS and your mounted stick. The app will automatically download the image for you and copy it in the drive.

Now:

Finally, you may copy everything you want to flash there (BIOS, firmwares, etc).

I need to copy the BIOS update in the flash drive. This is the BIOS update for my pc: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/soft … g=&os=2093

Do I copy the file. exe directly in flash drive? And later?

Re: Kernel panic, Hardware Error

That bios is a setup file... you need a working windows install, but maybe, mini windows xp included in hirens boot cd may work. You may use 7zip (also included on that iso) to decompress the installer and then you can run  "flash.exe" (it's one of the eight files that are compressed inside that installer)
no need to complicate, just grab a cdrom and burn the hirensbootcd iso. choose "mini windows xp" from boot options, let it boot, decompress the sp37378.exe, run flash.exe and you're done.
http://www.hirensbootcd.org/download/

this is my sugestion... what other people said above me also works.
