Apache access from local network [RESOLVED]

Hey guys,

The IP of my apache server is 192.168.1.65, I need to organize access to Apache from local network only. For example I have VirtualBox VM with IP 192.168.1.70 (Windows XP) but I can't access my Apache with IP 192.168.1.65. Please give an advice, which parameter of httpd.conf should be configured for scenario like that.

Thank you in adavnce,
Alex

Re: Apache access from local network [RESOLVED]

Can you access apache from your workstation? To what IP is Apache configured to listen? What do you mean with "can't access". Can you connect? Can you even ping the host? Can you connect to other services?

Re: Apache access from local network [RESOLVED]

From my apache server I can access web if i use: 127.0.0.1 192.168.1.65 localhost alext etc. XP machine can normally ping apache server. By can't access I mean IE error "IE cannot display the webpage". There is no Access denied error of 404 error, it looks like there is no resource. I have also checked httpd access_log, If I try to access Apache from XP VM:

192.168.1.70 - - [20/Feb/2011:15:27:25 +0200] "GET / HTTP/1.1" 302 -

Apache is configured to listen port 80 without specified IP Address.

Can you connect to other services?

At this time I plan to use only HTTP without additional services.

Re: Apache access from local network [RESOLVED]

The best strategy is to try another browser such as Firefox from XP. Or, you should disable 'friendly error messages', so you can see what Apaches' actually response is. If you get entries in your access_log, everything works as it should.

Re: Apache access from local network [RESOLVED]

Thanx, I'll try Firefox, but key point of this procedure - CMS testing with IE :-)

Re: Apache access from local network [RESOLVED]

Well, Firefox rarely says "IE cannot display the webpage". wink So what is the exact error you're getting? Also, do the hits end up in your access_log like they should?

Re: Apache access from local network [RESOLVED]

Unable to connect

Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at localhost.

    *   The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few
          moments.

    *   If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
          connection.

    *   If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

and only 192.168.1.70 - - [20/Feb/2011:15:50:10 +0200] "GET / HTTP/1.1" 302 - in access_log

Re: Apache access from local network [RESOLVED]

It looks like somewhere connection from remote hosts is disabled... Here is my httpd.conf just for any case

#
# This is the main Apache HTTP server configuration file.  It contains the
# configuration directives that give the server its instructions.
# See <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2> for detailed information.
# In particular, see
# <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/mod/directives.html>
# for a discussion of each configuration directive.
#
# Do NOT simply read the instructions in here without understanding
# what they do.  They're here only as hints or reminders.  If you are unsure
# consult the online docs. You have been warned.
#
# Configuration and logfile names: If the filenames you specify for many
# of the server's control files begin with "/" (or "drive:/" for Win32), the
# server will use that explicit path.  If the filenames do *not* begin
# with "/", the value of ServerRoot is prepended -- so "/var/log/httpd/foo_log"
# with ServerRoot set to "/etc/httpd" will be interpreted by the
# server as "/etc/httpd//var/log/httpd/foo_log".

#
# ServerRoot: The top of the directory tree under which the server's
# configuration, error, and log files are kept.
#
# Do not add a slash at the end of the directory path.  If you point
# ServerRoot at a non-local disk, be sure to point the LockFile directive
# at a local disk.  If you wish to share the same ServerRoot for multiple
# httpd daemons, you will need to change at least LockFile and PidFile.
#
ServerRoot "/etc/httpd"

#
# Listen: Allows you to bind Apache to specific IP addresses and/or
# ports, instead of the default. See also the <VirtualHost>
# directive.
#
# Change this to Listen on specific IP addresses as shown below to
# prevent Apache from glomming onto all bound IP addresses.
#
#Listen 12.34.56.78:80
Listen 80

Re: Apache access from local network [RESOLVED]

the issue is resolved, there was incorrect base_url configuration in my script. After I have changed localhost to IP of HTTPD everything is fine! Thanx for good idea and inconvenience caused :-)
