Even though apps may be in AUR, is there a way to make a request to get them into Arch officially?

Step 1) Start with packaging some apps in AUR
Step 2) Apply to be a Trusted User
Step 3) If other TUs and devs find you to be a competent packager (proven by your skills in managing AUR and other pacakges), you will be approved to be a TU
Step 4) As a TU you can bring in any application you want into [community] provided you are also willing to maintain it and update it once you get it into [community]
Step 5) Profit.

OR
Step 1) Request a PKGBUILD in the appropriate forum (or better yet, create one yourself)
Step 2) Submit the application in AUR
Step 3) Wait for enough votes AND an interested TU who is willing to move it to [community]
Step 4) Profit.

There's very little profit to be had. I'm fairly sure it's Allan who put a stop payment on my last several TU paychecks. Once I prove it, I'll be on a plane to New Zealand, but the irony is that I can't afford the ticket because I haven't gotten paid.

IIRC Jason Wryan is from AU but works & lives in NZ and Allan does it the other way round :-)

They're not being passed by, they're in the AUR.

Besides the difference between installing an official package (just install the package) and an AUR package (type "makepkg", then install the package), do you find there's a difference between the two?

Airasia for the win! No US flights though. They do do NZ and AU at least, also some Europe destinations (just started Paris I believe). Prices are rock-bottom low especially if you find a promotion.

@drcouzelis - there IS a difference, even with the benefits offered by helpers like bauerbill/yaourt/clyde. The amount of bug-fixing required is quite a bit more, and the amount of time taken with non-trivial packages (mainly compiling) isn't very little either. Most importantly, AUR packages don't have quite the implicit guarantee of quality that repo packages have (I'll turn a blind eye to Allan's recent bash fiasco ).

Yes but the voting system doesn't really work since there are AUR wrappers that let you automatically vote for every package that you install..

If not, that would mean a lot of spurious votes for someone who just tried out a particular app.

The one I use (bauerbill) does not do this.
