Re: Laptops which run Arch

Asus G73JW-3DE (although this should work on other G73J* (JH and JW- type laptops also, but the JH are ATI while JW are nvidia based)
A couple of things would no work right out.  The screen brightness, keyboard backlight (i know, trivial, but still useful), and touchpad hotkey (although touchpad still does not work with button, I found a work-around in AUR)

After base instalatin and DE install of KDE 4.6, these are the steps that I have taken in order to get my laptop to work fairly well.  This is mostly a cut-n-paste from where I also posted on notebookreview after some really nice help from other Linux users.

***personal cut***
1) install acpi acpid acpitools libacpi acpi4asus
2) modify /etc/rc.conf and added acpi_laptop to MODULES line
3) added /etc/acpi/ events for keyboard backlights (thanks ALLurGroceries for the zipped files to make this work!)
4) lots of time, patience, and lost hair

ok, so the things I have done as of the past hour or so:

1) installed kcm_touchpad (which I got that idea after booting into a live USB drive of Kubuntu) in order to get a UI for the touchpad.

2) modified my touchpad a bit with synaptics touchpad info

4) inserted      Option "RegistryDwords" "EnableBrightnessControl=1"      into my /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-nvidia.conf file

5) removed acpi_osi=Linux (or acpi_backlight=vendor, whatever you're using) from boot commands (as i have found out before your last post, that the Option line and boot command line DO clash!)

As of right now, my hotkeys for brightness work astoundingly well! mouse hotkey is still not working, but at least I can turn it off via KDE touchpad settings now, so it's not as big of a deal as it was a few hours ago! Also reset the settings to it isn't as 'touchy' All I need to do now is figure out how to turn on the option to freeze the mouse whilst typing and everything will be perfect as for now.

Big thanks to ALLurGroceries and NaterGator for all the info and help! I just hope that this info can be pieced together for anyone else that might need it on the G-series laptop!
***end personal cut***

If anyone else has info that they can add to that thread, please be kind and contribute your dsdt code of your Asus G-series laptops!  NaterGator is doing a fantastic job at trying to gather enough info to make Asus-wmi better for us Linux users!

Cheers!

*EDIT*
just to add, it seems that the new BIOS update has fixed the problem with the keyboard buffer (or some such) so two thumbs up for Asus for fixing a problem!

Now, i know that I had seaid that everything has worked, but it seems that I was mistaken;  The SD card reader for some reason has not been working.  I used Ubuntu thumbdrive to verify this, and sure enough, it does not work at all in Linux.  I ran lsusb and lspci to try to find the inofrmation on it, but it seems that it does not exist!  Odd....  Windows will read/write, but only after installing the proprietary software from Asus (of course)  Will keep updating this until a fix has been found, or I am corrected on my knowledge of the hardware.

I use the Medion E1312
Everything works except for WLAN, but this is a common driver problem with all distros.
ndiswrapper doesn't help here either.

The recent update from

to

xf86-video-ati-6.14.0-1-x86_64

broke the capability of X to display any proper imge on the screen. So I just reverted back.

Installed Arch on my Dell XPS 15. Installed xfce4 DE. Had to download the correct alsa sound driver and nvidia drivers for the audio and video to work.  And I had to write a script to get the suspend/hibernate to work.  Also for wifi I need to get the correct firmware.  Rest everything looks fine

Recently installed on my dell xps m1330,
not much config was needed for touchpad - I'm curious as to how the media buttons will work once I start
installing music & video players, will browse around though.

Picked up this laptop for only $180 about 2 years ago because someone returned it - great deal for me! smile

Re: Laptops which run Arch

I'm running Arch on a Acer Aspire 5538G and everything works just fine. Also, I'm getting roughly the same battery time I had while it ran Fedora or Windows. Bluetooth works, wireless works, graphics work just fine both with the open source and with the proprietary drivers. Fn keys work as well without any special configuration. While using the touchpad, you can emulate both righ and left clicks, so multi-touch is also working.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

HP dm1z-3000

AMD Fusion E-350 with the radeon 6310
ralink 5390
arch 64 bit

Long story short.  works, but had to jump through some hoops.  Fresh install with 2.6.37 and the xf86-video-ati from extra and multi-touch wouldnt work...  I had to compile the wireless module to get wifi to work (followed these instructions:http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=10452987&postcount=42 ) booting into X the screen was flickering.  I tried to change to the catalyst drivers which worked, but suspend to ram wouldn't work.  I then upgraded to 2.6.38 in test and multi-touch worked.  i finally switched back over to the radeon repository display drivers and suspend to ram started working again.  fyi my suspend to ram issues were from init3 so X wasn't even running.  Seems to me KMS was needed in order to suspend properly.  I haven't experimented with hibernation yet, nor bluetooth.  However it seems to detect it just fine.  Webcam does work from fresh install.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

Sony VPC-CA: i7-2620M / ATI 6470M

Two things don't work perfectly out the box with the 2.6.37 kernel, namely the wired LAN and the ATI 6470.
The ethernet module is an Atheros which should work with the atl1c module, however (as documented elsewhere on the web), you need to modprobe atl1c manually and also run the following:

echo "1969 1083" > /sys/bus/pci/drivers/atl1c/new_id

Using the new proprietary catalyst 11.3 drivers, the ATI card requires a bare bones xorg.conf as per the wiki entry for the radeon 6870:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/AT … glrx_10.10

similarly, if you want to remove the 'AMD unsupported hardware' watermark, the script in the link above works. I haven't got the OSS radeon driver working as yet.
Everything else works as it should. The machine is a very strong performer, but an odd looking thing!

update: Using testing 2.6.38, atl1c is now working correctly and xf86-video-ati 6.14.1-1 works nicely (albeit a bit warm compared to the proprietary drivers)

Re: Laptops which run Arch

Finally I can say my Fujitsu Siemens Esprimo Mobile U9200 works perfectly. It needed a patched kernel to fix some buggy coding on the bios that prevented the battery state from being correctly displayed, and an extra argument during boot for the backlight buttons to work. Havent configured the touchpad disable key since I dont really need it, but I also found a solution from that on the ubuntu wiki, and might implement it in the future.

Running Gnome 2.32.1

└─[$]> uname -a
Linux laptop 2.6.37-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Fri Mar 25 15:10:00 CET 2011 x86_64 Intel(R) Core(TM) i3 CPU M 350 @ 2.27GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

First issue happened during the installation, I had to append i915.modeset=0 (or 1, dont remember), otherwise I would boot into a black screen. After installing the system and the appropriate driver (xf86-video-intel in my case) I didn't have any issues with black screen anymore.

Dual screen worked out of the box (Im pretty surprised I must say, last time when I used linux (~half year ago) when I connected the second monitor , the whole system froze).
Both wired and wireless connection works perfectly.
Internal cam works out of the box (checked with cheese), internal mic needs configuration (Didnt have time yet to mess with it).
Speakers works fine.
Didnt test the external headphones/microphone, but I see no reason for them not to work.
Couldnt test the Ricoh SD card reader yet.
AuthenTec finger print reader, havent been tested yet, but according to what I read about ThinkPads, it should work fine.
Cpu frequency scaling works fine (both cores runs now at 933MHZ), not sure about the graphics core (Anyone knows how I can check?)
Both CPU cores right now at 50C (which is fine I guess)
Suspend (a.k.a sleep?) works fine, Hibernate I guess have some problems, but I didnt fully test it.
Sound keys (Latitude E5410 have 3 sound control keys - Mute/Unmute, Volume Down, Volume Up) works out of the box.
Fn keys works out of the box (Tried the Fn+F1 which is sleep in my case).

Now to the problems:
As for the popular Load cycle problem, After installing Arch the count starting to increase pretty fast. Disabling laptop-mode on AC and putting the value 254 to hdparm -B seems to solve it.
However the temperature of the hard drive is constantly 44-47C, which is pretty high IMHO compared to the temperature below 37C in windows (Im not yet worried, should I?)
Also the fan is rotating too fast (I can hear it), its like periods, a period when the fan rotates fast and makes noise, and then period when its silent (periods could vary from 5-15minutes each). Im not that worried, I had the same "period" issue on windows, tough I didnt use the laptop long enough on window to say if its a problem. Also I suspect the hard drive heat causes the fan to rotate faster.
Another big issue is that the touchpad recognized as PS/2 generic mouse. I guess its because the touchpad uses ALPS2 which is not compatible with current kernel. I found a patch that modifies the mouse module in drivers/input/mouse, but I dont know how to recompile this module under Arch (for this I asked a question on the forum).

So overall Im pretty happy with linux, it would be awesome if Ill be able to fix the "overheat" issue and the touchpad issue (right now Im using mouse because I dont have scrolling functionality on the touchpad).

I hope it will help somebody. Im glad to put my contribution (as little as it is) back to the community smile

Re: Laptops which run Arch

I'm running an HP G50 111-nr, ath5k wifi (patched).

Installation was a breeze without hiccups. I had an issue with my sound card though after installing alsa-utils. However, running "modprobe snd_hda_intel" fixed the issue after looking around. But that is because I didn't realize that it was working fine out of the box which I realized after rebooting to configure alsa LOL (since it was muted so I installed alsa to get a mixer which was a bad idea apparently). Other than that the default wifi LED flash for each packet transmission was annoying but I fixed that searching the wiki (as with everything else smile)

Re: Laptops which run Arch

Acer 4820TG - i3 330M - Intel X25-M 160GB - Ati 5650 + Intel Chip

Works fine but during the setup process, I got to use Wifi because Atheros LAN was not recognised.
After installation I set up Openbox as WM and process to disable ATI Chip, this huge battery eater !

Now I'm on automounting for external devices !

Thx to the community for the wiki

Acer 4820TG | Win7 + Arch64 | SSD boot time 12sec + 2sec WM | ATI Switchable but Intel only in most cases

Re: Laptops which run Arch

Asus U36Jc does not work out of the box, but with some tweaks, it runs with most functions intact.

Solves the problem with Optimus. It's important not to install the nvidia drivers. Instead, use the link above to disable nvidia card at bootup and go with the included Intel card.

I had some problems with ethernet, shutting down when sharing over nfs or the like. The following link includes the solution:

After these fixes, I could not be more satisfied. Batterytime is Awesome and the integrated Intel card is perfect for any linux dist. I did my self a favor and put in an ssd disc. I totally recommend doing this, even if it's a bit tricky.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

Dell Vostro 1014.
Works mostly fine, I've been running arch on it for a year now.
Internal mic doesn't work, I mean, it does if you shout right in front of it. Yes, I did check for mute/volume etc and several modes for the module. It just wasn't meant to be sad
