XFS Great For Video and Music files[SOLVED]

I've been using Linux on and off for a long time now but I had never bothered to pay much attention to the filesystem choices because I needed to use ext3 so Windows could directly access my partitions.  Now that I don't have to concern myself with Windows compatibility I've been experimenting and I just wanted to give a huge thumbs up to XFS as a filesystem for many large music/video files.  I have a 2TB WD Green Caviar filled with music/video and I do frequent editing and encoding which can include lengthy file write times, however, with XFS I'm seeing at least a 50% speed increase which is great as the WD Green drives aren't very snappy in the first place.

Re: XFS Great For Video and Music files[SOLVED]

Thanks for moving this.

@nTia89 -- I didn't use a very scientific method.  I just kept an eye on my stopwatch after performing various file moves and copies.  To be specific I was copying from an ext3 partition to an xfs partition.  I didn't write down everything, but one that I did was transferring 35 gigs of music files, 3mb-6mb average, which took just 5min 32sec.  Maybe others get much better speed but for me and the hardware that I am accustomed to using this was a huge improvement.

XFS has long been touted as a high performing FS for large files, so I am not surprised by your results.

Re: XFS Great For Video and Music files[SOLVED]

Do not take the "not for lots of small files" warning lightly though.

Extracting the kernel archive and removing it will take ages. (Especially nice if you didn't have /tmp as a RAM drive, packer puts extracted files there, and you boot up with a half hour long "Removing left over files")

At some point, find and mlocate have started to wreck my system too, to the point where even mpd and the mouse halt for seconds.

Well, the small files problem can be solved: http://wiki.flexion.org/LinuxFileSystems.html
I used XFS for a while, was really satisfied with it, until my daughter pressed the reset button on my machine and XFS simply zeroed all files that were opened at the time of reset. This happened to me twice, so I quickly removed all traces of XFS from my system. Use XFS only if you have UPS.

Re: XFS Great For Video and Music files[SOLVED]

@SanskritFritz:

Thanks, that seems to help a lot. (EDIT: 10 times faster, but there were some XFS updates in the kernel too)

$ time rm -R linux-2.6.37.3 linux-2.6.37.3.tar.bz2

real    3m7.385s
user    0m5.573s
sys    0m0.443s

Extracting gave some hiccups. On the other hand updatedb worked OK again.
