Need some advise for Verizon / HTC Incredible Android

Hello All,

Let me state from the outset, I am not asking about how to root my phone nor am I asking about how to tether the phone.

That said, I am the very happy new owner of a HTC Incredible phone. I am a Verizon subscriber because they have the best coverage in the areas I wander. I have loaded the SDK and have already written and uploaded apps to the phone (and to the SDK emulator). Boy, is my Java rusty.

Today, I tried tethering it. I know I won't get anywhere with being a wireless hotspot without a monthly charge unless I root the phone. I did believe I would be able to USB tether the phone without going to any heroics. I followed the wiki on android tethering and started with the usbnet solution. The phone seemed to enter the mode, but the kernel did not create a device and dmesg did not reveal anything interesting. Ok, fine. I decided to skip over the AUR package for now and moved on to the openvpn solution.

I installed AziLink on the phone, installed open VPN on my arch laptop, turned of the wifi on the laptop, established an openVPN link to the phone, and , Voilà, it worked and I could browse, use pacman, etc... Only, I noticed it was faster than I expected on a 3G network. Then I realized the phone was still associated with my home's wifi. Makes sense. So, I tuned off wifi on the phone which promptly fell back to 3G. After the phone dropped to 3G, the laptop lost connectivity with the network. Restarting everything did not help. Finally, restoring the wifi on the phone brought back my laptop connectivity.

Before I waste any more time on this -- Is this going to be fruitless ?? Was I wrong and has USB tethering been crippled, or am I missing something fundamental with OpenVPN / AziLink ?

Suggestions are welcome, but please -- this is not the forum for how to root the phone. For now, I am not interested in rooting; and if I change my mind, I will do more research before posting. and the posting won't be on the Arch forum.

I was able to tether my original Verizon Droid using EasyTether without needing to root the phone. The free version wont work with https sites, but its not expensive to buy the full version after you figure out if it will work. Its not fast but seems to work ok.
