Problem with wpa_supplicant and wpa2 on laptop

I'd like to start off by saying that I spent a bit of time searching for an answer to this problem as I chose to install Arch as a way to learn a bit more about linux configuration (already put gentoo on an old machine and wanted something different).

I'll get to the point. My wired eth0 is working fine, but I'd like to get wireless working so I can finish my installation (extra packages and such) off of it. The thing is that even though the device is recognized under ifconfig and is operable to run iwlist scan and iwconfig, it just wont associate the access point.

i updated the /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf file as per the wiki, and made sure to update the entry to fit with wpa2

when running

wpa_supplicant -i wlan0 -c /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf

i get

octl[SIOCGIWSCAN]: Resource temporarily unavailable
ioctl[SIOCSIWSCAN]: Device or resource busy
Failed to initiate AP scan.
WPS-AP-AVAILABLE
ioctl[SIOCSIWSCAN]: Device or resource busy
Failed to initiate AP scan.
WPS-AP-AVAILABLE
ioctl[SIOCSIWSCAN]: Device or resource busy
Failed to initiate AP scan.
WPS-AP-AVAILABLE

you get the idea
after a reboot i would get

octl[SIOCGIWSCAN]: Resource temporarily unavailable
ioctl[SIOCSIWSCAN]: Device or resource busy
Failed to initiate AP scan.
WPS-AP-AVAILABLE.
WPS-AP-AVAILABLE
WPS-AP-AVAILABLE

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
