Re: RIP perl-xyne-arch, powerpill, bauerbill, etc

@ngoonee

powerpill is not in AUR

probably every arch user uses powerpill and reflector

actually I think this should be on the main news!

Re: RIP perl-xyne-arch, powerpill, bauerbill, etc

I guess, as mentioned before, someone who's quite into perl is willing to adopt that "out-of-date" stuff.

Actually, I must truly admit, I always wondered why some of these packages are named like abc-xyne-xyz. After lurking around, I got the point.

Thanks for ya hard efforts, Xyne.

But powerpill was.  It might be a good idea to elevate this topics visibility.

My mistake on that first point, but [community] is just that, community packages. Currently the line is a bit blurred, but [community] is meant as a 'binary-AUR' rather than just another official repo (or was).

In any case, 'every arch user' is a gross overstatement. pkgstats currently shows 21.65%. Skype, wine, powertop, opera, compiz, all have more (that's just a list of the more famous ones, go check the statistics out if you're interested). This isn't to put down Xyne's work (which I'm very grateful for), just to put concerns about 'stickies' into perspective.

Just because you (and I) use it doesn't make it critically important.

Thanks for your hard work, I've been using powerpill almost since the beginning, as I tend to wait some weeks before upgrading it ws really useful to maximize my bandwith by downloading multiple packages (open-office and wesnoth I'm looking at you)

Re: RIP perl-xyne-arch, powerpill, bauerbill, etc

I had been happily using bauerbill (thanks, Xyne!) to check the status of my AUR packages ("bauerbill -Qu --aur"). It was a great tool.

Are there other ways to get the same info, i.e., list AUR packages for which there are updates available?

Thanks.

Thank you, Xyne! I'll miss bauerbill, it was my favorite and only AUR helper.

Let us know if you write another powerpill!

Thanks for these great projects. They were great!

Need to find the way to continue using aria2 with pacman now.

pacup() {
    local CACHEDIR=/var/cache/pacman/pkg
    pacman -Sup | grep -v 'Starting full system upgrade\|there is nothing to do' | aria2c -d "$CACHEDIR" -i - && sudo pacman -Su
}

It doesn't use multiple mirrors, but for me one mirror is enough to max my connection. The main advantage this gives is when you need to download many small packages, as for me the biggest delay when downloading with pacman is in stopping and starting each package sequentially.

Note that it doesn't include an initial -Sy because I prefer to do it separately, then review what is going to be upgraded with this.

Note 2: My package cache is user writeable to avoid running aria2 as root.

Note 3: The grep in the middle there is needed until FS#20683 is solved.

Xyne: Big thanks for all your contributions, always appreciated. smile

Yeah, I also used to have bauerbill, it inspired my own aur/abs script a lot.

Re: RIP perl-xyne-arch, powerpill, bauerbill, etc

Wow ! Haven't done a -Syu for a long time, and i find that my beloved bauerbill has disappeared sad
It was by far the best aur helper i tried : perfectly managing dependencies, user privileges for build and so on. Bauerbill contributed greatly to my good user experience with archlinux. I personnaly find pacman quite awful to use, and without the comfort of bauerbill, i may go back to ubuntu and use aptitude !
Thanks a lot for your great work Xyne, i will miss it badly ...

Yeah, but Reflector is very very popular from what I've seen smile. Anyway, what are some good alternatives to it?

Nice. Since my mirror lists work fine, I'll wait a bit for it to hit community and reinstall it.

Re: RIP perl-xyne-arch, powerpill, bauerbill, etc

Also just wanted to give you a heads up Xyne. It's sad that for now I will not be able to use reflector and bauerbill because those must have been one of the most useful packages I had on my system - but oh well, all things need to come to an end and you did a great job for so many Arch users so far.

On a side node: I love the Arch community. Anywhere else, people would be complaining by now. Not here. Archers rock smile
