Automounting USB devices

For some reason, automount is not happening on my Arch linux. I am running Arch linux with XFCE. I can see the device listed when running "lsusb" or "ls /dev/sd*" and can be mounted manually. I am wondering what would be the reason for automount failing?

Re: Automounting USB devices

Have you searched the forums and or the wiki? There were a number of threads on how to fix auto-mounting when Xfce was upgraded.

Barring that, do you get any errors. If so post them so someone can actually help you. Saying that it is not working doesn't amount to anything. Tell us what you have already tried to fix the problem so people can give you other solutions to try.

Re: Automounting USB devices

Sorry for not searching before posting. My mistake. I could fix the issue by installing "gvfs".

BTW, if "gvfs" is required for automounting, shouldn't that be part of the installation/upgrade of XFCE?

Not necessarily. Not everyone might want to auto-mount. During upgrade though, it does show gvfs as an optional dependency. That's why it is very important to read what pacman outputs to you.

Re: Automounting USB devices

Strangely, I had "gvfs" installed before the upgrade. Here is the pacman.log (look at the date)

[2010-05-22 19:44] installed gvfs (1.6.1-1)
[2010-05-30 10:21] upgraded gvfs (1.6.1-1 -> 1.6.2-1)
[2010-07-14 19:06] upgraded gvfs (1.6.2-1 -> 1.6.3-1)
[2010-10-18 08:06] upgraded gvfs (1.6.3-1 -> 1.6.4-1)
[2010-11-08 20:37] upgraded gvfs (1.6.4-1 -> 1.6.5-2)
[2010-11-15 20:35] upgraded gvfs (1.6.5-2 -> 1.6.6-1)
[2010-12-11 19:05] removed gvfs (1.6.6-1)
[2011-03-28 22:07] Running 'pacman -S gvfs'
[2011-03-28 22:10] installed gvfs (1.6.6-1)

Before running 'pacman -S gvfs' today, I have tried 'pacman -Q gvfs' and it returned no results. But the log says it was installed much before that. And running 'pacman -S gvfs' did an install and not reinstall. So for some reason, pacman was unable to determine "gvfs" presence.

yeah but you also removed it on the 11th of December 2010 or 12th of November 2010 (depending on which date style you use).

I don't see a problem.
