Re: The Canterbury Project

yes, very good one, they got me for a minute before I realized what date it was.
The fact that it is a concerted effort by so many distros is actually quite remarkable.

Re: The Canterbury Project

If they could pull this off while keeping all the core fundamentals of each distribution, then this would essentially be the Mother of all distros.

BTW, when you're pulling off an April Fools joke, do take into consideration that your home timezone probably isn't even in April (I'm guessing Toronto, I'm in Calgary, and it's 22:35 right now...)

Re: The Canterbury Project

Opensuse's news post was the best:

http://news.opensuse.org/2011/04/01/the … tribution/

Oh, and by the way, this was the best part

Robin H. Johnson, lead of the Gentoo Infrastructure team, in a panel of core Gentoo developers at SCALE9x:

I really hate compiling-induced downtime. I’ve been looking forward to installing packages with just a couple of keystrokes. By building on the efforts of other successful distributions, we can take the drudgery out of system
maintenance.

Sorry, you're on the wrong side of the planet smile. The majority of us (population wise around the globe) are already hours into April.

Re: The Canterbury Project

For a moment there, I was looking forward to spending 3 hours unsuccessfully using an cryptic PKGBUILD 5 times with Portage to compile my three-year-old copy of YAST and then adding it to my janky LiveCD.  Damn April Fool's Day.

Seriously, though: here's to diversity! big_smile

So the big question now is:
Who from what distro took the first step in making this April Fools joke a reality? wink

Fedora, but they don't care to participate because now they are busy working about the next innovation... LOL

Re: The Canterbury Project

Just noticed that the description differs between Arch and the other sites:

Arch Linux wrote:

We are pleased to announce the birth of the Canterbury distribution. Canterbury is a merge of the efforts of the community distributions formerly known as Arch Linux, Debian, Gentoo, Grml and openSUSE.

Re: The Canterbury Project

Outdated remark:

I feel sold out...looking for an other distro...I need stability. Linux is too important for me to let this happen. I need a distro I can trust...

EDIT - dont do this guys! I have stake holders here! Ya know, the vampire-stake-holding kind?
Good joke, wonderfully synced among the others. Escpecially since my last update involved a Pacman update as well. Talk about putting the wrong two and two togehter... big_smile
