[Gnome3] How to add custom application to start bar?

The new Gnome3 is great however I have a couple of applications I need to start with specific command line options. How do I specify them?
Similarly , how do I add a non-graphical application to the start bar?

Thanks

Gnome3 is in testing. Please create threads in the appropriate forums

what is this start bar? the top bar? You can't add anything in there.

Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

Maybe he means the dash?

Re: [Gnome3] How to add custom application to start bar?

Two main ways to do this:

1. Install "alacarte" from extra (GTK2, I assume it's deprecated).
2. Edit the .desktop file directly, located in /usr/share/applications. The "Exec" line says the command with arguments to use, and the "Terminal" line says whether the application is to be used in a terminal.

I hope this is what you were looking for smile

Re: [Gnome3] How to add custom application to start bar?

I meant the left bar (dash?). Modifying .desktop files sounds a reasonable solution. Any GUI planned for that purpose in the future.

Now what about the top bar? Can I add applets, application shortcut (arandr) and also get rid of the accessibility icon?  Gnome3 sounds less configurable at least via GUI.

The top bar is system-owned and is never planned to be customizable. It's fast enough to add a favorite application to the dash (using the Windows key is a good shortcut key for it), so there's no need to use the top bar for anything. Also, I don't see a reason why you'd ever have to remove the icon. The accessibility indicator is there "just in case".

Maybe be just because we don't want/need it and, so, it is totally useless for our needs ?

Fully agree with Jaco. This is Open Source software so it will be removed if people don't like it.
