Filezilla server question [SOLVED]

In windows there was filezilla server, really easy and fast to use for ftp data shareing. I don't get it why in linux there's only the client option and what alternatives do I have beside vsftpd, I'm looking for something a bit faster to configure than playing "all the day" with config files.

Thanks in advance

Re: Filezilla server question [SOLVED]

vsftpd takes only a few minutes to setup... when you need it turned on /etc/rc.d/vsftpd start

not hard really

Re: Filezilla server question [SOLVED]

agreed, I've just set it up in about 2 mins (that includes reading wiki and installation). Don't know if there's any gui for that, if that's what you find easy to setup. Anyway, virtual users are also very easy to setup via wiki, and not all options are listed in config file, you probably want to look at official wiki.

Re: Filezilla server question [SOLVED]

Part of the reason is that the security model of Linux usually disallows users from opening any of the well know port numbers below 1023 (inclusive).  It can pretty much be assumed that ports in that range belong to the system.  Also, In my opinion, GUI applications tend to be hard to secure and represent a potential point of attack.  As such they should not have any more privileges than necessary -- especially if they open public TCP ports.

One thing you may want to consider.  If you have an ssh server running on your box already, Why not just use a SFTP client (GUI or CLI) to talk to the existing ssh server.  You can restrict it, require passwords, require keys, etc...

Re: Filezilla server question [SOLVED]

okey, as I've looked more into vsftpd config file I've realized I kinda misjudged it. It's really easy to use and flexible too. I can view the shared files using firefox , chromium and it works well with filezilla client. In the future I have to find a complete config file for vsftpd with all the possible options, so I could set up a permanent secure ftp server.

I have to say you never know until you really try it

Thanks for your time

Re: Filezilla server question [SOLVED]

By the way how can I use a name like my_ftp_serv.org instead of the IP address using vsftpd

You can sign up at dyndns.com. You can then install a client (I use ddclient; although there are others as well) and you will have a dynamic TLD name. I use DynDNS's services to connect to all of the machines I admin for friends/ family/ neighbours.
