What panel/launcher do you use?

Hi,

I'm currently experimenting with openbox and i'm still searching for the best panel (for me)

I liked gnome-panel (gnome 2), but i'm searching for worthy alternatives

So far I have tried:

*Lxpanel (current top 2)
*Barpanel (sucks)
*xfce4-panel (my current top 1)

I wan't a panel that is highly customizable (and with applet support) (EDIT: I figured I actually don't need applets)

So,... what awesome panel or launcher do you use to make your desktop rock ?!

You'd probably think highly of adeskbar, although I've had some trouble trying to acquire the sources in adeskbar's AUR pkgbuild (I had commented as such on the AUR page for adeskbar and someone had responded with an alternate URL for the source). I've also tried Docky and wbar (I am not sure about either's support for applets I'm afraid); but I have settled on tint2-svn. (The "non"-svn version does not support launchers, and tint2 does not support applets at all; but it is pretty and it is small.)

Before finding and eventually properly configuring tint2-svn I was using Lxpanel and was very happy with it as well.

Few days ago I have migrated from KDE to OpenBox. I have found I don't need more elaborated panel rather tint2 is. All monitors (KDE plasmoid replacements) can be configured any imaginable way with conky. As for launching - I never used kde's K icon before. gmrun launcher is sufficient for me (besides few openbox key bindings for mostly used apps which takes 99% of overall cases).

So, a short answer is: tint2/gmrun

I switch between Tint2 and xfce4-panel. As far as lightweight panels go, xfce4-panel has the most power.
I like Tint2's multi_desktop mode, but I also like xfce4-panel's plugins.

If you want something a little heavier, you would probably like adeskbar, or awn.

I've used gmrun, but now use dmenu. Both are fine, although dmenu has fewer dependencies and might be a better option if you are trying to avoid installing something required by gmrun.

After an eternity of using tint2, I switched to bmpanel2 because it's a bit more stable. Tint2 had some disappearing tray icon issues.
And I'm quite happy with it.

I'm using gtk+2panel with openbox
Used to use tint2. Also using kupfer.

I also use dmenu-launch, which can be found in the AUR. It's way more usable for me than dmenu. It has an option to launch a command in a terminal, as well as also searching for the XDG name of apps and not just the binary files' names.

bmpanel2 is nice. tint2 as well, but neither have applet support AFAIK. I don't know what applets you want, but in the past I used a transparent conky on top of tint2 to show a status bar on tint rather than using system-monitor type applets.

I don't use a panel at all currently. For a list of open windows, I pipe wmctrl into dmenu; I can then easily raise whatever window I want. This was inspired by ratpoison and Musca.

For system status info, I pipe conky into dzen2, but I have written the script so that the bar is collapsible. This is partly because I am a minimalist and partly because I am on a netbook with a small screen and would rather not give away even a little bit of space on the screen.

Fbpanel is pretty good. It has a menu, launchers, a window list, a tray and a clock (I suggest you set the clock type to tclock). I think it is a good replacement for gnome-panel or xfce-panel.

Yeh, just started playing with fbpanel. Its pretty awesome tbh it has a pager and some nice plugins and fully customizable. I like it

I've tried a lots of panels ( pypanel , tint , adeskbar ) . But definitely I like bmpanel2 .

I was using FVWM and it's stuff, but now I'm back in Openbox, it's tint2-svn, but I have yet to configure the launchers.

I've pretty much done away with the need for any sort of panel, so the only thing I want is a launcher. For a long time I was happy with dmenu, but recently I got over my love affair with the keyboard. Two very simple point-and-click launchers that I now like to use are 9menu (what I tend to use as it is already in Debian's repos) and thingmenu.

I don't use any panels, since imho that's pretty pointless when using a tiling wm...

As for launchers, then I also dosen't use any, since all the everyday kinda stuff allready is binded to it's own key-combo's, and when I need to run something that isn't hotkey-mapped e.g. something newly installed or whatever, then I don't see the point in raising a launcher for that either, since it's just as quick to go to my "term" dwm tag and run it from there, where I have a free terminal focused and ready in the tmux session, and which also has the benefit of completion(with any extra cmd args) and history...

However, if I should recommend one, then it obviously would be dmenu...

I use Openbox, and I think that tint2 looks well-integrated with it. It's also really simple, as I only need to see running applications, a volume icon, battery notification and the date/time.
