Computer/laptop turns on by itself

Hello!

After upgrading to kernel version 2.6.38, my laptop become to turn on by itself.
It happens all the time. After turning of laptop by command "poweroff" or "halt -f" laptop switches off, but sometimes, it turn on by itself.

I tried to downgrade kernel. Spontaneous launches stopped.
Again set a new kernel version - began to run again himself.

How can this be?

Just want to note at a time when the laptop is running himself, he is not connected to the LAN or to an electrical source.

The same problem I have seen on a desktop computer.

Sorry for my English.

Regards, Vlad.

i fear that your computer has developed a mind of its own. kill it now before it kills you!

Re: Computer/laptop turns on by itself

I have this issue also. It happened twice; once immediately after shutting down, and the second time a couple of minutes after turning the PC off. I wonder if it's software or hardware related. It happened only on the new kernel. It's not annoying, as it is rather unfrequent.

Re: Computer/laptop turns on by itself

Interesting, on my new Thinkpad x220i (which I set up just this weekend), the same happens, but with a slightly different pattern (more regularity):

If on battery, it turns on automatically each time after it has just  shutdown (whether I use "sudo shutdown -h now" or "sudo halt" doesn’t make a difference).

If on AC, it doesn’t turn on after shutdown when using "sudo shutdown -h now" (have not tried yet with "sudo halt").

I disabled WOL in the BIOS as well as bluetooth, which I found in some forums to be responsible for this behaviour.

I’m so hoping to fix this problem with "shutdown -hP now"…

edit: I tried now and it turned back on after 2 secs, the same as with shutdown -h now or halt. What could this be? I have not consciously installed any wol software nor even fiddled around with hibernating/suspend scripts.

I’m using Stock Kernel with laptop-mode-tools… which information are needed in order to hopefully fix this soon?

Best,

Jakob

Re: Computer/laptop turns on by itself

It sounds very much like the bug described in this thread https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=113985

Haha how could that be? Just tried to use the conservative instead of the ondemand governor, and I can now reproduce the bug with not shutting down linux. But if I go back to ondemand I have this bug all the same as well… seems as if I’d have to wait simply for a fix of it.

I have the same behavior in my laptop. Does anyone have some news about this issue?

Which laptop (and more importantly) which kernel version? Most of the time, I use hibernation by now, but I think I am quite sure that I didn’t encounter this wrong behaviour anymore (did a BIOS update for my thinkpad but I think it was someweher in linux 3.0.3 or 3.0.4 that switching off the computer started to work again.

Re: Computer/laptop turns on by itself

My laptop is a Sony VPCEB4C5E and have the kernel 3.0.6.

I'm also use hibernation as a quick solution, but I think that this is not the best.

Regards.

I had this behavior since 2.6.38 (turning on by itself after shutting down, even without battery), but got recently fixed with the recent laptop mode tools update released a few days ago.  This is on a HP Pavilion 2415nr.

Re: Computer/laptop turns on by itself

Hey everyone, I've been experiencing the same thing. I remember dealing with a very similar issue maybe 3/4 years ago on Debian, which was solved by a kernel update... We'll just have to wait for an update then I guess? Oh, by the way, this is NOT a laptop, so it's not solely a laptop-thing.

Re: Computer/laptop turns on by itself

I have this issue with my new Thinkpad L430.

Anyone found a solution?

When I turn it off it goes a few secounds and it turns itself back on again. This started to happen after the latest upgrade.

It does this a few times until I get it to stay off.

Re: Computer/laptop turns on by itself

what command do you use to shut it down? systemctl poweroff works fine on a systemd box…

Re: Computer/laptop turns on by itself

I use systemd, but i shut down via gnome3
So that depends on what command gnome3 uses. I'll google it now and see if I can find that out.

Re: Computer/laptop turns on by itself

It seems like it is some kind of gnome command.

gnome-session-quit --power-off
Dont know what command that this command calls to actually shut off though.

Edit: stystemctl poweroff does the same as gnome 3

Re: Computer/laptop turns on by itself

thoho180192, please do not necrobump threads.

This thread in 2011 is no longer relevant because we didnt have systemd then. Start a new thread and explain what your problem is in detail.
