(random) X / KDM crashes with Intel and Kernel 2.6.38

I have been having seemingly random X crashes with the latest Kernel, KDE and Intel related packages. What I believe is a similar problem is documented here by a Slackware user/forum. Also a similar claim to this bug report at Red Hat (even though I don't have a problem resizing images in LibreOffice Impress).

I don't know exactly how to reproduce it. It just happened twice in 5 minutes, an hour ago. Hasn't happened since. Before that, it ran nearly a day without crashing. Crashes have been happening for the last couple of days.

edit: Just happened a few more times. Error/Backtrace output is exactly the same.
This may be silly, but could this be related to the touchpad? I guess it happened when I was touching it... Still, there's no apparent cause -> effect. Since I do that all the time, that would be a very rare effect.

The following excerpt is from /var/log/Xorg0.log.old

Re: (random) X / KDM crashes with Intel and Kernel 2.6.38

Same problem here, I had it for a couple of weeks having at least 1 crash a day. After last update its been happening way more often.
Do you have dual monitors. Because I just disconnected it mine and seems stable. Hope this helps you while a fix is found.

I had a similar issue after updating to .38.  Once i reinstalled my video drivers the problem was solved.

Re: (random) X / KDM crashes with Intel and Kernel 2.6.38

I had some troubles with ConsoleKit/KDE as well (ConsoleKit session didn't start, as in an emtpy ck-list-sessions >that meant that the networkmanager applet didn't work, external disks didn't get mounted, plus, an error window right at the startup of KDE). I got fed up with it and ended up backing up .kde4 and starting a "fresh" KDE (and then copying lots of the stuff back). That solved all of my latest problems with KDE (these crashes were just the latest; the ConsoleKit issue was a recurring feature). Or so it seems, so far.

I did change something in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-monitor.conf, so that may have helped somehow, since I noticed some errors/options not loading in the Kernel.

It now states:

Section "Device"
        Identifier "Device"
        Driver "intel"
        Option "AccelMethod" "uxa"
        Option "Tiling" "true"
        Option "Dri" "true"

The sucession of kde* upgrades since 4.4.* until 4.6.2 and possibly the deprecation of HAL that happened meanwhile (4.6?) had something to do with it, I suppose. Nevertheless, I have no idea why (in particular) the crashes started happening in 4.6.2. I'm risking talking too early, but everything does seem to be fine and as been for the last day and half.

Even though scrapping KDE and starting a fresh KDE isn't a proper solution, I'm changing it to Solved.

Re: (random) X / KDM crashes with Intel and Kernel 2.6.38

While your solution is greatly appreciated, Isn't marking it as solved discouraging other people/dev to look at the problem and try to find an "official" solution and cause to the problem ?

Also, would you mind posting your complete /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-monitor.conf

Since the xserver update I've had the exact same problem the slackware user descibed on my x201.

Crashes are as far as I can tell random. Im currently using the old xserver, which works fine.

Hardware is, as mentioned above, a X201 running awesome as window manager without a login manager.

If more info is needed, just ask, X crashes every 1-60 minutes, so it shouldn't be a problem.

Re: (random) X / KDM crashes with Intel and Kernel 2.6.38

I was getting the same crash while running a hybrid of xmonad and GNOME. Installing the xf86-video-intel-git package from the AUR appears to have solved this problem (and other minor ones), at least in the short term.

I'm running dual head with integrated intel graphics. It was running more or less smoothly until I updated to 2.6.38.

Edit: Regarding the OP's note that this happened while touching the touchpad--I could trigger this crash fairly reliably by opening ISE Project Navigator and rapidly scrolling.

I'm having the same exact issue on my Lenovo x86_64 laptop since I did full system upgrade some days ago.

It definitely has nothing to do with touchpad here and happens at random either when I'm working or when I'm away and the laptop is idle. Will try installing intel video from AUR, hopefully it helps since it's really annoying.

Re: (random) X / KDM crashes with Intel and Kernel 2.6.38

After installing the xf86-video-intel-git package from AUR X hasn't crashed for 2 days so I was almost sure this issue got fixed until today my X froze completely as described here: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=936528

Not sure if it has to do with that git driver, but I hope it gets fixed soon since it's really frustrating.

Re: (random) X / KDM crashes with Intel and Kernel 2.6.38

Same problem here, X either crashes or hangs. I was thinking on installing xf86-video-intel-git but "affect" has pointed out it's useless, so I've run out of options. What can we do?.

same issue here, It doesnt matter which application is running, it happens every now and then. I noticed that before evey crash i was clicing with mouse. For me, there is no segmentation fault or any error in xorg logs.
I am using xfce4 with compiz and emerald enabled.

Re: (random) X / KDM crashes with Intel and Kernel 2.6.38

I found solution. For me i removed v86d from my system , altered mkinitcpio.conf and generete initramfs again without v86d. This may or maynot be your case, but it will help someone. Just to mention that I was not having any errors in my system nor any records about X crash.
